I'm surprised a hard core Dale fan such as yourself took that as an insult. That was something I admired about him, on the track, he didn't let the little things get in the way. I think he would have thanked his fans, but that the award was something he never aspired too. If he was here today, the sport would be better. His death, and Mile Helton and Brian France running things, have really taken the harder edge off things. And I like that edge myself.

The last thing I intended my statement to be was as in insult.
No, no! I wasn't insulted at all. I was agreeing with you. I bet he was smiling down on all of us with that sh*t-eatin' grin of his when we all stood for the 3rd lap during the 2001 season and just shook his head.

Believe me, Dale's biggest win was the Daytona 500 and the trophy that came along with it. I know that as sure as I'm sitting here!

Are you trying to get me going Penny ???? You just want me to say something negative don't you !!!!!

As for this year it was NIT Wit that finished 3rd.

That list verifies how unimportant that award actually is. By just considering stats, and I know this has virtually nothing to do with racing, why would Waltrip even be on this list ?? The only time he got any air time was on his commercials. How many times did you see his car on the track ?? When it was on the track it was so far back it still didn't get any air time.

Most popular driver ..... nahhh, it's all a farce. Most awards have some sort of criteria to them. This is just how many times can I vote via the internet.

Mikey probably finished third based on those NAPA commericals. Those were funny, definitely shows the guy can poke fun at himself.

Here, here!!! Can we get an "AMEN!" Brother Steve?

It's strictly, to me, a "warm & fuzzy, feel good" piece of plastic that means nothing to me.

They wanted to give me a piece of crap like that when I retired. They couldn't even arrange to get it before I retired. Guess I wasn't worth the effort !!! I do get the check OK though.

Being a former squid, you'll understand this where some won't:

When I hit the 22 yrs, 8 days, 6 hrs. point they wanted to give me the usual retirement crap. (flag in a shadow box, inspection, retirement dinner, plaque, and on, and on...)

I actually had to go to a special Captain's Request Mast to get them to cease and desist and to NOT make me endure any of the aforementioned!? My official stance was all I wanted was a flag and the pension.

I won out, in the end, but the Command was less than pleased. Which only verified my position; the whole pile of doo-doo wasn't for ME; it was only to make THEM feel good.

Yup ... totally understand. My last place was the same. They wanted a breakfast and a pat on the back. I said i have work to do and didn't want it. Somehow I ended up with a dental appointment that day so I had to leave early anyway ..... forever.

I'm sure we've discussed this before but what was your rate and grade at the end?

BEEP was in Orlando
"A" was in Pensacola
"C's" were all over. I was in Chicago, Mare Island, San Diego, and in-theater in Bad Aibling, Ger.

My path was a little different because I SCORE'd into the CT family. I spent my first nine years in the Navy, as a GMG. That school was entirely at Great Mistakes.

That seems like areal change. I had an E-6 who was once a BM and became an AT. No fun to work for. The word stupid comes to my mind often. I was at North Island in '69. Did we meet in the chow hall once ???

Oh well that is all history now.

Nope. I was a GMSN in '69 with ATF-211 MACV and NAG in Tay Ninh, dining on small fish, rice and nuoc mam.

You're right. That was another life. I hate to use cliches which have been run into the ground by REMF's who don't have a clue but it wasn't nuthin' but a thing.

Well, lookee here, LSC! Dim Wit made the list twice!

Notice that in 2002, Elliott still won, then Jr. took the reigns in 2003. I believe that was right around the time Elliott became a part-timer. Sympathy vote, my a$$!
you missed one lilttle, maybe significant fact here, Penny. after winning the Most Popular vote in '02, Elliott permanently took his name off the ballot. without that, I wonder when Jr. might have gotten his first Most Popular?
