Remember "The Hat Man"?

I happened to get a glimpse of who we knew as "The Hat Man" while watching Dale tonight (yes, again. I'm waiting for Dancing with the Stars, hoping Helio wins!). Got me thinking! Hey! What the hell happened to him?

I didn't even realize he's been gone as long as he has. 10 years! Interesting guy.

The hat man. He especially liked Earnhardt in victory lane.

Re: Remember "The Hat Man"?

I never much cared for him from what I could see. He seemed to want to be in control. Just my observation.

I found his most interesting quote to be "NASCAR didn't want anything to do with Victory Lane at that time. They left it up to the racetrack promoter. When the race was over, NASCAR wanted out."

Well, that's not fair. He swapped hats off/on the winners for photo ops with the media/sponsors. What's wrong with that?

"Control"? That's an interesting observation given the state of the sport today!

I dunno .. as I said that was just my perception of him. That certainly doesn't mean that's the way it was. He may have been a great guy doing a wonderful job ... I just didn't see him that way. I'm sure his life didn't change one way or another over the way I perceived him.

The last I knew, Bill owned a bar (sorry, I can't remember the name) in downtown Elgin, IL. Surprise of surprises, it had a racing theme.

He sold it to his son.
