What About These Rules For Cup?

over on Yahoo! they have a Q&A area. under Auto Racing, this question was posted:
What do you think of these rules for the CUP series?

No qualifying No guarantee starts. Use heat races to place field (kinda like the Gatorade Duels) If the race is now 500miles, split the cars attempting to make the race into two groups (heat 1& heat 2). Each heat 125miles, the top 20 from each heat going to the main. Then have a 250mile main. Still a total of 500 miles for the viewers and it would be more interesting. All races run on the same day. TV networks can pack the commercials in between races, so we can see more racing.
Now the points issue, give the top 5 finishers in the heats points (10 for 1st and going down 2 per spot until 2 for 5th). Then give the winner of the main 50 points going down 2 points per position until 2 for 25th. No points for finishing outside the top 25 in main or top 5 in heats.
Do away with the chase.
Every car not on the lead lap within the same scoring loop (scoring loops are placed all around the track to set the field after caution and get speed intervals) as the leader, gets a lap back.
Except for the 500 mile race only part, I think we ought to consider it for every race. What's your opinion? Would it work at Infineon as well as Martinsville? At Pocono and Las Vegas? At Richmond and Daytona?

Throw out the road courses and short tracks. It's got potential.

Re: What About These Rules For Cup?

i dont see it working ....... and ill tell you why ....... this is off the top of my head so it may make no sense, but ill give it a shot

JJ and JG are in the final heat race ..... JJ blows a tire and takes them both out ....... neither of them make the race ?

DuPont would be extremely pissed

how would it effect ratings if one week JJ - JG - Jr and Smoke all were wrecked during heat races and were subsequently not in the main event ?

Simon let me answer this to the JJ and JG part. Attendance and TV ratings would spike with these two out as everyone will enjoy them not bein in a race. They may not like hearin about it all race, but they'll enjoy them not bein there. Most everyone would sing songs of merriment. As for Dupont.... SH!T happens.

It's 50/50 on Smoke and Tony.

the sponsors have the gold and they wouldnt take being shut out of races like that

having told you why i think it wouldnt work ..... here is something i like about it ...... let's say there are 2 heat races and 60 cars manage to scrape together the money to race ........ if all those stars get knocked out in the heat race we could likely see relative unknowns in the race

having said that ..... is any yahoo with the money allowed to enter a Heat Race ? ...... how would it sit if i make my debut in a NASCAR event at the Loudon chase race and i take out a chaser ?

the cameramen would be lost without being able to just follow JJ and JG around the track

They really don't follow them anyways. The 24 and 48 have transmitters in them that the cameras lock onto automatically, so all the crew has to do is switch to different cameras.

I wouldn't mind seeing a race without them. At least then we might get a chance to see some of the other racers. As far as DuPont being pissed, some sponsors get pissed every week, wouldn't hurt for it to be them once in awhile.

As soon as HMS switches to Honda in 2010 they won't be such a dominant force.

Oops .. I'm not supposed to let that out.
