I had a blog written, before the final race of 2007, disparaging the Chase even more as Jeff Gordon’s incredible season was about to result in a runner-up finish.
The blog pointed out the sagging ratings and attendance, and that Brian France had never counted on Dale Earnhardt Jr. missing the Chase twice and Jeff Gordon having two championships taken from him by a playoff system that has proven to be just as contrived and unfair as 80 percent of the fans said it would be.
It had a new name for the Chase: the Ultimate Phony Debris Caution. I also aimed another arrow at folks using the stupid “best teams step up when it counts” argument. As if Kevin Harvick and the 29 crew would have been the best team in 2007 if only the Daytona 500 counted. Please.
Playoffs are for people who make money from the sport. Period.
