Question here's an idea for nascar.. a new rule...

i'm sure someone has mentioned this before...

nascar should implement a new rule...
for car owners who own 2 or more cars..

the rule is...

if 2 or more drivers from the same racing team make the chase for the cup , only one will be allowed to compete for the chase for the cup. and that driver would be who has the most points , unless that driver is willing to forfeit their spot in the chase for the cup for another teammate.

i think that this rule would ensure a more competitive finish to the season...

i know some of you would disagree.. but honestly.. its not even fun to watch a race anymore... not only that... ratings have been way down.

whats your opinion on this?

and no.. i am not targeting hendrick motorsports....
this is just a general observation...

Re: here's an idea for nascar.. a new rule...

I believe it would be virtually impossible to introduce any such plan. So what you are saying is that two of the HMS drivers would have to sit out the chase ??? Why would they even want to race the other 26 races ?? While I agree that the chase is a bust, I think there are better ways to make the final 10 races more exciting. Just do away with the chase all together. If limiting the teams is necessary, then start now and where would you set the numbers at ??

No mega car teams, two teams maximum, make a 9:1 engine, no restrictor plates and limited on the number of tires used per race. That (tire rule) works for the trucks.

Re: here's an idea for nascar.. a new rule...

While I have to admit it was boring watching just JJ and JG go for the title, because we really didn't get to see any hard racing, I don't see where they could do this rule. Why say they can have 4 cars and then penalize them if more than 1 of them make the chase?

if you really think about it..nascar does alot of things for the spirit of competition.. so why not modify the chase to make it more exciting.. and not so anti-climatic...

Nothing at all to offend me. My statement was made in jest. Rather than modify the chase I say dispose of it. My feeling is that the guy in 13th place is absolutely locked out of the top 10 with almost 1/3 of the races left. I find that totally unfair. I believe it was Matt Kenseth that moved up 6 places in the chase. Imagine the difference to the wallet and the sponsors if the 13th place team could move up 6 positions. The current chase set up, as I see it, is all about TV ratings and money in the pockets of the owners of NASCAR. The playoff idea isn't totally bad but for me the current method stinks and is unfair.

Re: here's an idea for nascar.. a new rule...

My solution is simple.

Revert back to Bill France Sr.'s iron-clad rule which was in place from 1958 to 1987. No owner would field no more than two teams per race. Period, end of report.

It made sense then; it makes even more sense now. It would reduce the cost of competition, increase the number of primary sponsors and while the ones with the most $ would continue to have the most wins, the divide between the "Have's" and the Have Not's" would be narrower.

NA__AR has "reduced the number of teams to four" by 2009. B.S.!!! Already Roush has an additional two teams (Yates). Ditto Hendrick with the two former Haas teams. Gibbs is laying the same groundwork with its "arrangement with HOF Racing.

This mega team concept is pure, unadulterated B.S. and will ultimately be a part of the ruin of NASCAR.

Re: here's an idea for nascar.. a new rule...

Shockey, I think most folks on this forum believe the basic problem is the Chase format. some like it, most don't. unfortunately, your suggested rule, though intriguing, would never get past the front door at NA$CAR HQ. it's a sponsor thing. think about the sponsors who would be banging on NA$CAR's door if they tried to implement such a rule...

I did a little research and here's what the chase would have looked like this year had your rule been in place (name, owner, primary sponsor, points position going into Chase, Chase starting points, final standing):
  1. Jeff Gordon - Hendrick - DuPont - 1st - 5040 - 1st
  2. Tony Stewart - Gibbs - Home Depot - 2nd - 5030 - 2nd
  3. Carl Edwards - Roush - Office Depot - 4th - 5020 - 5th
  4. Jeff Burton - Childress - AT&T Mobility - 7th - 5010 - 4th
  5. Martin Truex, Jr - DEI - Bass Pro Shops/Tracker - 10th (tie) - 5010 - 6th
  6. Kurt Busch - Penske - Miller Lite - 10th (tie) - 5020 - 3rd
  7. Bobby Labonte - Petty - Cheerios/Betty Crocker - 17th - 5000 - 7th
  8. Juan Montoya - Ganassi - Texaco/Havoline - 20th - 5010 - 8th (tie)
  9. Kasey Kahne - Everham - Dodge Dealers - 22nd - 5000 - 8th (tie)
  10. Robby Gordon - R. Gordon - Jim Beam - 27th - 5000 - 10th
  11. David Gilliland - Yates - M&M's -28th - 5000 - 11th
  12. David Green - Haas - Best Buy - 29th - 5000 - 12th
these teams would have been "passed over":
  • Denny Hamlin - Gibbs - FedEx - 3rd - 3490 - 15th
  • Jimmy Johnson - Hendrick - Lowes - 4th - 3439 - 13th
  • Matt Kenseth - Roush - DeWalt - 5th - 3430 - 14th
  • Kyle Busch - Hendrick - Kellog's /CarQuest - 8th - 3199 -17th
  • Clint Boyer - Childress - Jack Daniels - 9th - 3179 - 16th
  • Kevin Harvick - Childress - Shell/Pennzoil - 12th - 3155 - 18th
  • Dale Earnhardt, Jr. - DEI - Budweiser - 13th - 2954 - 22nd
  • Ryan Newman - Penske - ALLTEL - 14th - 2890 - 19th
  • Greg Biffle - Roush - Dish Network - 15th - 2721 - 20th
  • Casey Mears - Hendrick - Nat'l Guard/GMAC - 16th - 2698 - 21th
  • Jamie McMurray - Roush - Crown Royal - 18th - 2535 - 23rd
  • JJ Yeley - Gibbs - Interstate Batteries - 19th - 2506 - 24th
  • David Ragan - Roush - AAA - 21st - 2431 - 26th
  • David Stremme - Ganassi - Coors Light - 23rd - 2342 - 27th
  • Mark Martin - DEI - U.S. Army - 24th - 2320 - 29th
  • Reed Sorenson - Ganassi - Target - 25th - 2287 - 25th
  • Elliott Sadler - Everham - Dodge Dealers - 26th - 2279 - 28th
**note: the final standing is computed using the points actually accumulated during the last 10 (Chase) races added to the points as of the start of the 1st Chase race.

so while this would seem to beg for smaller teams, on the contrary, I believe it would do just the opposite and "team orders" would become prevalent as well as "team play" during the Chase: the larger teams having a distinct advantage in "helping" their contender toward the Championship.
(I did implement a logical extension of the rule in that a driver with more points would be selected for the Chase over one with more wins from the same owner.)

now, talk about generating rivalries!!! not driver to driver, but owner to owner - WOW!!!

Re: here's an idea for nascar.. a new rule...

"ensure a more competitive finish to the season"

Ah yes. The ultimate twinky zone. A rule/approach/intuititive methodology that ensures against any and all eventualities that may arise over the future course of human motorsport history that may cause anything less than the perfect competitive season in/to the eyes of all observers and interested and participating parties. It's (current generation) Franconian.

It doesn't exist. Never has. Two teams per owner, ten teams per owner, the 35, 25, fastest 43, draw a pill, throw a dart, un-Chase, re-Chase, hobble the dog, points, bonus points, most $ won, eeny meeney, (your choice here) - any all will result in something less than the 100% pleaser and none will avoid the exceptional (good or bad) possibilities. None.

Pick and stick. Choose integrity. Stand against the wind. Accept the results - Fat chance.

Oh, I'm sorry - I'd prefer that the constant rule change in pursuit of the elusive dream cease. Not sure that is clear as our opinion here within the above.

Please enjoy the above. Tongue here is DEEP in cheek and funnin'. Go gettin' serious here, and one is on their own.

Re: here's an idea for nascar.. a new rule...

Sorry, Shockey. I had to vote "No" on that one. Nice try though.

The only way to make The Chase better is to get rid of it altogether!
