Re: Are All Championships Equal

Wow, yet another thread that bashes the King. how sad. I won't even dignify it.

Why are so many just determined to tear him down? I see your point, but why should Petty pay for the era he raced in? He beat all comers, on all types of tracks, from dirt to Daytona.

And Dale was certainly GM's favorite, son. Didn't RCR help develop the racing Lumina, that Dale had some of his best season in??? I seem to remember that. That sure gave him a leg up, and just a small advantage is more than enough for a man, and racer, of his immense talents.

I put him and Big E as equals, and I'm sure that Dale would, if he was still here to express hisself. Back off the King, huh!

I know you seemed to be waiting for just one person to respond, but I would just ask for folks so quit ripping Petty.

Does anyone really think he couldn't have been successful in this day and age? He did win in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Granted, not as much in the end, but so what! Dale Sr hadn't won a cup in 6 seasons, going on 7 at his death. I think the jr getting in Cup seemed to bring some fire back into him, though.

Again, I respect what all these folks did. Does Bobby Labontes 1 title mean less than Kulwickis, or BP's, or Matt Kenseths?? That is truly in the eye of the fan, and from where this fan stands, all these champs are worthy, and raced under the rules of their eras.

I'm done here!

Next topic!

Re: Are All Championships Equal

It like comparing apples & oranges, ya can't. Personally I think championships won "back in the day" were more about a drivers & crews abilities. These days I think its more about technology and computers.
Back in the day you had the King riding 500 miles crewing a wet rag & getting a cup of water shoved through the window on a pit stop. These days drivers have air conditioned suits & personal trainers.

Re: Are All Championships Equal

It really is an apples and oranges question. There are no two years worth of championships that are equal except that tyere was a winner. Each year provides new challenges to the teams. 40 plus years ago they were far more closer to a stock car than anything we have today. How could you possibly compare a 1957 Chevy to todays Chevy ??? Obviously you cannot so how can you possibly compare the end result of a season ?

Richard Petty and Dale Sr. both won 7 championships. Nothing you say can change any of that. They met the requirements at that time.

Equipment has changed, people have changed and sponsorship has changed. You just cannot equally compare something that is not equal.

Yep,nothing like a mod trying to get a rise out of a member for no reason, but admitted by a mod..If this forum wants to change into a fight room that can be done, just let me know which way you want to go mods.

From the above post it looks to me like Simon was/is looking for opinions about this issue. No where does it say anything at all about starting a fight. Before I allow you or anyone else to make that happen I'll close this thread. You may consider that a request, threat or promise. If anyone feels the need to fight please find your way out of this forum. The entire premise behind this forum is for discussion and opinions. If for some reason you cannot join in with one or both you have two options. Move to the next thread quietly or just leave the entire site.

Any questions ???

Just exactly the way it is written. He got your attention, stated a couple of opinions and did NOT once request to start a fight.

If you have constructive discussion or an opinion by all means voice it.

I'm informing everyone right now that this thread will not turn into a fight.

Discussions or closed. Your choice.

Who is bashing the King? He's an incredible driver, especially for his era. I just said in my opinion, Earnhardt is the best.

Re: Are All Championships Equal

For what it's worth from my little corner of the world, while it might institute debate, comparing NASCAR champions for completely different eras is almost as big an exercise in futility as comparing home run hitters from Babe Ruth's era to the cork-batting, steroid-injecting Bozo's of today.

Good luck on your comparisons, folks. I'll just watch this one.

And that statement right there says so very much. If you look at all the changes in NASCAR over the past 50 plus years it becomes evident that comparisons are difficult at best. In no way can you compare Jimmy Johnson to Benny Parsons. Two totally different era's. The same applies to King Richard and everyone else. They were all the best for at least that season that they won.
