Sorry its taken so long to reply Ross, new job has me off the puter more now. Anyway, I didnt say he sucks, I just agreed with Simon.
But Simon is right and here's why......
He is and always has been a spoiled brat. His stepfather started him in 1/4 midgets at a young age and always put him in the best equipment. Very few kids even get a chance to ride a go-kart, let alone drive the best 1/4 midget racers out there.
Step daddy wanted him to drive Sprint Cars at 16, but he was too young to race in California, so he packs up the whole family and moves to Indiana where he would be legal. How many parents do THAT for their kids?
He does well in sprints, midgets, etc, then moves on to Busch in the Bill Davis Baby Ruth
FORD and has a decent, not great, but decent run that Series. Davis was grooming him for his fledgling Cup team. But instead of being loyal to the guy that got him into Stock Cars (Davis), he opted to follow the money trail of Rick Hendrick.
Once he got in with Hendrick he had the Crew Chief of a lifetime with Ray Evernham. If it wasnt for Ray, Gordon would not have near as many wins or Championships as he does. Ray knew how to get the car perfect for Gordon, yet Gordo got most of the accolades.
Oh, and during this time frame, he married the former Miss Winston. I believe at the time, it was against Nascar rules for drivers to fratranize with the current Miss Winston. But with Gordon, they made an exception.
What a model husband he turned out to be.
Now as for him as a driver. Yes, he can drive......but most of the guys out there can. Equipment is EVERYTHING in Cup racing, and he has ALWAYS had the best. Everything was handed to him on a silver platter, he didnt have to work for it with a lesser team. Today it's the norm for young drivers to go to top teams, but when Gordo came in, it was unheard of. The late great Dale Earnhardt is the one that dubbed him Wonder Boy.
Gordon has never proved he can win with an ill-handling car, like Earnhardt could. He just cries about it, and is only happy when he is in a perfect car, that is up front. In recent years, you here him constantly saying his car is terrible in traffic, but great when in the front. Well DUH, every guy out there has the same problem with aero push!
When he bumps someone and they spin out or hit the wall, its ok in his book, but if he is the on the recieving end of it, he was done wrong and thinks Nascar should do something about it. He is a Primadona that does no wrong. Gordon has Tony Stewart beat by a bunch in the Double Standard game.
I'm not taking anything away from his ability as a driver, but there are a ton of guys out as good as him, but havent had the top shelf equipment and crew to prove it. Like I said at the top, Jeffy has always been a spoiled brat and still is to this day. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is, like Simon Says..........GORDON SUCKS!
Some of the greatest moments in Nascar history is when his car is showered with beer cans by fans for having wins handed to him, fans booing him winning, fans CHEERING when he crashes, etc........ahh, memories. LOL
Hopefully this will clear things up a bit Ross.
