| Re: Is the King correct? My take is: IF (big "if") race fans thought that the team owners were not necessarily equal (I dislike that concept; "equal" teams and drivers) but rather on a par with each other, the Hendrick domination might actually be good for NA__AR. During some of NASCAR's (when they actually had cars that looked "stock," thus the "SC in NA__AR) most popular times there was absolute dominance. The era of Junior Johnson, the era of Richard petty, The era of Fireball Roberts, the era of David Pearson, the era of Darrell Waltrip, the era of Dale Earnhardt, and the era of Young Jeff. When any of the above entered a race during the height of their dominance, people flocked to the tracks. They came for one of two reasons, if they were the driver's fan, they came to see him kick ass and take names. If they didn't like him, they came to see another driver (any driver!) try and pin his hide to the garage wall. This principle drives local, short track racing and it driver NA__AR. However, in the NA__AR world we have today, the two Hendrick teams inspire about as much thrill as watching the schoolyard bully beat the tar out of the someone 50 pounds his junior. The Cup, this season, with the Jimminy and Jeffie jaugernaut, has turned into an extension of what the Cup Lite Series has become. B-O-R-I-N-G. Note to Brian France: Boring does NOT inspire new followers. It definitely does not retain old fans.

Anytime an inkling of a rivalry starts today, NASCAR ends it with a trip to the trailer. The only rivalry these days has been by the fans, like DEI fans vs HMS fans, and Junior threw a wrench in that one by going to the dark side. What makes the Chase between teammates like Gordon and Johnson so boring, is they like each other. They both have apartments in New York City. They hang out together. Gordon is half owner of the 48. There is no rivalry between the two. BORING! |

I was gonna say the exact same thing. And to prove it look at F1 this year. The Alonso - Hamilton rivalry at McLaren was the best thing for some fans since the Prost and Senna days (well minus the fist fighting and the "I gonna put him into the wall" speeches). And it certaintly helped to keep the interest. Gentlemen behavior is nice, but people really want rivalries with "sparks". We know that Yarborough vs the Allisons helped NASCAR.

Earlier in the season Smoke and Harvick had a dust up. Was this the start of a rivalry? Naw. The following Tuesday night Smoke had Harvick on his radio show and after mutual admiration they sang "Kumbaya." Jeffie beat the paint off Johnson's rear bumper at Martinsville. That one really went nowhere. Flipper makes a threatening gesture to Kenseth after a race. We could almost read Kenseth's mind in the U-Tube video; "Gawd! I hope he doesn't hit me! If I hit him back, what will Dewalt and RL say?" Numerous times drivers have bumped and banged this season and slaps and slanders resulted. (Harvick and Juan Pablo, for example) Within a hour after the checkered flag flew this forum, and others were full of "Dirty driving," poor sportsmanship, and "Ban him!" posts. This last example makes me wonder if the fans actually WANT a rivalry? |
