Old School Racing Series

It's probably wishful thinking, but I sure hope this is televised......

Former drivers to return for 'Old School Racing'
SCENEDAILY - 1:16PM ET TUESDAY NOVEMBER 6, 2007 - BY SCENEDAILY STAFF REPORT

Former NASCAR stars David Pearson, Harry Gant and Geoffrey Bodine are slated to compete in a new racing series next year, according to officials from Old School Racing.

The Old School Racing Champions Tour will hold 10 races in 2008, all on tracks 0.75 mile or less. The season begins May 18 at Concord (N.C.) Motor Speedway and ends Feb. 12, 2009 at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway.

Other drivers expected to compete include Dave Marcis, James Hylton, Derrike Cope, Phil Parsons, Jack Ingram and Larry Pearson. Eligible drivers are former winners in any of NASCAR's top three series, former ARCA, CART or IndyCar champions or former Indianapolis 500 winners. All drivers must not be competing full time in any of those series.

Drivers will compete in identically prepared cars furnished by OSRCT.

"I have been an ARCA truck series team owner for many years, have a few wins under our belt, but OSR is the most exciting thing I have ever been involved with in racing," said Gene Weaver, a managing partner of the series. "These drivers are legends in auto racing, and I hope that OSR can provide a platform that will allow us to show them how much we appreciate what they have done for this sport. They deserve recognition as the pioneers of racing, and it is the least we can do for them at this stage of their lives."

Other tracks on the schedule are Eldora Speedway in Ohio, Flat Rock Speedway in Ohio, Music City Motorplex in Tennessee, Springport (Mich.) Speedway, Southside Speedway in Virginia, Hickory (N.C.) Speedway and South Boston (Va.) Speedway.

I sure wish they were racing somewhere around here. I'd gladly buy a ticket to see these guys race.

Yea, I'd give anything to see the Silver Fox wheel a stock car again. It would also give Morgan Shepard a place to run where he could actually be competitive again.

yeah, but he'd have to retire first...

there's probably a couple more drivers who fall into that category

Re: Old School Racing Series

Derrike Cope, Phil Parsons ?????? Old School Racing CHAMPIONS Tour. I don't think so. Derrike Cope would have been forgotten long ago if Dale Sr hadn't had a tire failure in the 500.

Re: Old School Racing Series

No matter what happend to the tire, Derrick Cope is a winner of the Daytona 500. Didn't Cope also win a championship in the Busch or ARCA series?

He is a Daytona 500 Champion. The same might be said of Ward Burton. If Sterling Marlin didn't get out and start pulling fenders would he have won the race? The bottom line is, it doesn't matter.

Statistically you are correct, but he's never amounted to much overall. Just don't see him as a champion. He only had 2 wins in cup, 1 in Busch and none in CTS. Not sure about any other series. I just never saw him as competitive with the rest of the field. Yes there are others just like him but my feeling is he is still riding on that win from 17 years ago.

oncea3fan is right.

It was during a caution at the 1986 Wrangler Jeans Indigo 400 at the old Richmond track. He radioed to Richard Childress he couldn't see, and he wanted to pit. Richard said no, they didn't want to lose track position. So Dale backed his butt out the window, sat on the door, and cleaned the windshield while driving the car with his knees. The video of him doing this was included in the movie "Dale" which was on CMT recently.

Here's what Chocolate Myers, the big old boy who was Dale's gasman, said about it:

"Seems like it’s always raining there. It’s the old track and it’s muddy. Dale is screamin’ I can’t see anything. Richard (Childress) tells him to stay out we don’t want to lose position. Dale says "Hang on, I’ll be off radio a few minutes." And then you see the fans in the stands and he comes around the turn with his butt out the window and cleaning off the windshield...that was one of the coolest things...we did so many cool things...it’s hard to pull out just a few. It just shows whatever it takes, we’re comin’ out to win."
- Chocolate Myers.
