| Hollywood making movie about NASCAR's early days Hollywood has taken over the town of Archdale, as moviemakers shoot a movie about the early days of NASCAR. The movie, titled "Red Dirt Rising," is set in the early days of racing, but is a story about the relationship between a man and his father. The father, Jimmy Lewallen, is a moonshiner-turned-racecar driver in the 1930's and 40's. The son, Garry Lewallen, is the Archdale police chief turned movie mogul. The moviemakers have created a realistic set modeled after the old Tri-city Track on Johnson Street in High Point. -- WXII 12 NASCAR Movie Being Shot In Triad - Local News Story - WXII Winston-Salem |

The cast will be almost exclusively "B" List actors/actresses. One one will be a smoker They will have a politically correct, culturally diverse support cast. (The Hispanic and Muslim best friends of the star will be ASE-qualified mechanics and will help the star keep his car running fast. I know we saw lots of that in pre-WWII Highpoint, NC, right?) It'll have a police/moonshiner chase scene where a police car flies into a river.

| Re: Hollywood making movie about NASCAR's early days After opening my big mouth I looked at the promo trailer. Maybe the police car won't go in the river. I still will bet a cigarette (which about 80% of adults smopked in the pre-WWII days) won't be seen. I also holding my breath that Lewallen's friends won't be culturally diverse, either. |

| Re: Hollywood making movie about NASCAR's early days Oh, no! Not another one! ![]() This is going to sound really b*tchy, but I'm going to say it anyway. Who the hell is the target audience? If the target audience is the NASCAR fan, you know this film is doomed to fail. We're too smart! Yup! Too smart! That said, I can't imagine a non-NASCAR fan even being remotely interested in a story such as this. I'll be the first to admit that I liked Days of Thunder for the entertainment value. Again, the entertainment value. Nothing to do with the sport. I just don't get it ... but I won't lose any sleep over it! http://www.smileycentral.com/sig.jsp?pc=ZSzeb095&pp=ZN

| Re: Hollywood making movie about NASCAR's early days Well, Penny, there have been plenty of great baseball and football movies over the years. Clunkers, too, but a pretty even balance. Other sports have gotten good treatment in film, so I figure NASCAR's got to be due for a good flick sooner or later. They just need the right team of people working on it.

I agree as long as the story, script, and acting are all good then the movie can appeal to all. I'm sure in the early days there were plenty of great true stories going on in the early days of Nascar. They can make a movie be great and realistic at the same time. Who knows maybe the non Nascar fan can learn a thing or two about where our sport came from. Then it can go just the opposite. They can make a mockery of the movie and the sport and then the non Nascar fan will think even worse about the sport we love. Should be interesting to say the least. |

| Re: Hollywood making movie about NASCAR's early days I think there is still a general impression that NASCAR fans are all ignorant rednecks who sit in the back of a rusty old pick up with a toothpick in their mouth and a beer in their hand waiting for the welfare check. Granted we are not all brain surgeons but I've found that the media portrays us differently than we actually are. Consequently when it comes to making a movie we end up looking like country bumpkins. |
