Track owner may be thinking big

HAMPTON, Va.
So what is Bruton Smith really up to?
Whatever it is, it may be bigger than just the furor surrounding Smith’s threat to pull the plug on Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
This whole thing seems to have the momentum of a snowball rolling downhill.
While NASCAR teams spent the past two days at Smith’s Atlanta Motor Speedway testing the car of tomorrow, Smith has been looking at the bigger picture.
Smith, who owns many of NASCAR’s most prestigious tracks, has been having long discussions with the governors of both North and South Carolina about his speedway plans for Charlotte.
South Carolina officials seem quite interested in trying to woo Smith across the state line. And Smith has been talking with both Brian France, the NASCAR CEO, and Jim France, Brian’s uncle and the man who now owns majority interest in both NASCAR and the International Speedway Corporation. Whatever these three may be discussing, well, it’s probably not the weather.

That is a much easier story to swallow than NYC. There is just no logic to NYC. I could be way wrong though.

I was gonna say LSC... if and I emphasize IF, this holds tru about NYC, then NA$CAR/ISC would get their wish for a track in manhattanbut, I'll wait and see what the hell is goin on. On a side note, I'm bettin Smith will be hiring securtiy guards to watch his back. He better, he could have just signed his own death warrant.

One of the main the reasons Na$car is losing much of its longtime fan base, myself included.

The move comes after Concord residents complained about the track owners plans to build a NHRA drag strip on the properties. It is rumored that New York has offered incentives in the 2 billion range for Smith to move the races including the Winston All Star race to the new track in Manhattan. A last minute ditch effort by North Carolina buisnesses is being made to save the track or offers to build a new track in Charlotte seem to be falling on deaf ears. Bruton Smith was quoted as saying he is 90% sure that the track is leaving for good. If the races are gone from Charlotte you can expect a mass exodus of drivers and jobs in the Charlotte Mooresville. Most likey these teams and drivers would relocate to Texas in order to be centralized to the other tracks NASCAR now races on. The really sad thing is NC was the birthplace of NASCAR and now these teams and trackowners have sold out. Greed has extinguished any hopes of getting back races at North Wilkesboro or Rockingham or Darlington and now you can add Charlotte to the list. I never would have believed Phillip Morris would have closed down thier operation in Concord either. This will have a domino effect in Charlotte. What was one of the fastest growing sportstowns in America is about to become a ghost town. If NASCAR pulls up stakes how long will it be before the Panthers go to LA or some other football market? The same thing with the Bobcats. Nations bank will probably move thier headquarters after laying off 3,000 last week perhaps moving to Atlanta. After that happens there will be a huge sucking sound as buisnesses associated with NASCAR move out of our area leaving behind a horribly wounded and dying economy. So thanks Bruton Smith for proving you abandoned the roots of NASCAR for money. It has been coming for some time but NASCAR has seen its zenith and will follow the IRL into obscurity in the South. Years ago we saw professional wrestling leave Charlotte gobbled up by the WWE. Now NASCAR is gone soon the only thing that they will have to do is argue who is going to pay all the high taxes?
What a load of BS.New York City did not want a track so why would the France's/ISC who tried to build one sell the land, NASCAR.COM - ISC sells Staten Island land ending speedway hopes - Oct 26, 2007 and let Burton Smith move in on building a track?

If Burton builds a new track it will be in an 18 mile area of the airport used by Lowes Speedway now. Here is more on that New York City crap, NASCAR.COM - Economic impact of LMS may dictate power struggle - Oct 30, 2007

Let's see does the name Donald Trump ring a bell? He wants NASCAR to build a track near his new casinos. Bruton Smith has long been rumored to have ties to the same organizations Trump does. Besides if they put it on the Jersey Shore it would give a huge tourism boost to the region and make Donald's net worth soar. So is it that far out of reach?

That's the buzz today...Sources: SMI buys New Hampshire track

I find it really hard to believe this rumor about NYC. It's already been proven that NYC does not want a NASCAR track there, and no amount of money is gonna change those people's minds, no matter who it comes from. Thinking otherwise is like thinking Hollywood supports NASCAR and the Hollywood crowd will fill seats at the Labor Day race in Fontana. This talk of NYC brings up another thing that's always really disappointed me about NASCAR. Having the awards ceremony there. It's about time they realized NYC does not support NASCAR and it's time to move the ceremony somewhere else. Like CHARLOTTE when they get the Hall of Fame building finished. To heck with NYC and to heck with Hollywood. Let's go racing in Kentucky on Labor Day and let's have the awards ceremony in Charlotte. That would help getting things back on track, in my humble opinion.

3ff we are talkina about the same idiots that gave a second date to a track that hasn't sold a single race out(california), so it shouldn't seem so amazing they would want to go to New York. I like the idea of havin the awards banquet somewhere else. As far as racin labor day weekend in the Bluegrass, as much as I want KY to get a cup date, I believe that race rightfully deserves to be returned to Darlington. Let's take races away from Bruton and give to Kentucky.

which one? and are you ready to loose all 7 SMI tracks???

remember, Bruton plays hardball .. he's already talked about taking his tracks (8 of them all together now that he has NHIS) and starting his own series

no idea, but you can be sure if he's gonna buck NASCAR it'll be competitive with Cup...

if that happens, NASCAR will have about a dozen open dates, or a third of their schedule
