| NASCAR needs to limit Cup drivers in Busch series? With 22 Nextel Cup drivers switching over as Busch regulars, the second-tier series guys have to find a different perspective. "If you don't change your goals," full-time Busch series driver Jason Leffler said, "some of you will self-destruct." The series is overrun with Cup superstars. Guess who can clinch the Busch Series title Saturday in the O'Reilly 300 at Texas Motor Speedway? That would be Chase for the Cup driver Carl Edwards. Busch-whacking, as it's called, puts big names in the Busch Series, but it can keep the young guys from rising to prominence. Busch-only drivers actually have to feel good about a 12th-place finish. So it's time to change the face of the Busch series. Time to limit the number of Cup drivers, change the series points system and give the up-and-comers their own Chase. Maybe then we'll know more about drivers such as Leffler, Marcos Ambrose and Stephen Leicht. -- Star-Telegram Star-Telegram.com: | 10/30/2007 | Full-time drivers are getting Busch-whacked |

| Re: NASCAR needs to limit Cup drivers in Busch series? I really wish they would. I know they say the big names are what sells the ticket and the reason people watch. I for one only watch the busch race when it's not loaded with cup drivers. I want to see the cup drivers race I'll watch on Sunday. They should limit the field to only 5 cup drivers and let each one only run 5 races per year. At the beginning of the year let them pick out what tracks they want to run at. If 20 cup drivers try to qualify, only let the fastest 5 race. If you attempt to qualify it counts as one of your 5 for that year, even if you didn't get to race. I watched the busch races to see the newcomers and what kind of talent they have. Now the only way to see that is when they race at different tracks and the cup drivers aren't there.

However, with the announcement that NASCAR will be using the new race car chassis in BGN starting in 2009 makes me think that I'll be stalked by Katherine Zeta Jones before THAT happens! The BGN Series will probably continue to be a paid test session for selected Cup teams.

| Re: NASCAR needs to limit Cup drivers in Busch series? They need to do something aout it. I like to see the up and comer's race and prefer to see no-cup drivers at the front of the field. If they don't allow Cup drivers to earn points I don't think it will impact anything. Driver's want to 'win' remember. The best way in my opinion is to do a 'top 35 rule' for the Busch regulars and have the Cup folks fight for the remaining spots. I can't believe I just said that?!!!!!!!! |

but, if they limited points paying appearances to some small number, say 2 to 5, for any Cup driver with that many or more Cup appearances in the season, it might fly. then the Cup-lite drivers could make a limited number of appearances in Cup without hurting their Cup-lite standings and a regular Cup driver would be prevented from winning the Cup-lite championship. but the purse problem is still there (which could be partially offset by "stuffing" the Cup-lite points fund) as well as Cup-lite being a "testing ground" for Cup drivers...

| Re: NASCAR needs to limit Cup drivers in Busch series? For once the top 35 rule may actually have a reason for being used !!! There are obviously many solutions to a problem most of us hate. The real problem is that NASCAR does not hate the cup boys moving down. As long as the cloud has a silver lining the thunder we create has no effect. It would be great if the series sponsor said "no more, or no money." I know .... never gonna happen. |
