Petty, what is your feeling on this one? Has this site been reliable in the past for you? Or, is this just another of those site where misguided bloggers hang out and debate about what outlandish rumor that they can start? The trouble with this one is that I know his trucking company is feeling the pinch these days and the story actually makes sense, in a sick sort of way.

| Re: Good way for a rookie to get into NASCAR. Of all the car owners out there, there are basically only two team owners whom I have the upmost respect for; BDR and Petty Enterprises. I'd really hate to see Bill and Gail go, ditto for the Petty's. The rest could disappear tomorrow and I honestly believe that NASCAR would be the better for it. |

| Re: Good way for a rookie to get into NASCAR. Disclaimer : lot's of "In My Humble Opinion" stuff coming, none of which will get you guys happy. Bertrand Godin's a car chronicler on french-canadian tv who's raced cars in lower series (mostly openwheels) for the better part of his life. He didn't get high on the ladders because of being "too much of a nice guy". - He's very honest and pleasant person so he wouldn't invent such a rumour. He might, however, be misled. Look, I'm a Villeneuve fan. But that one, really, puzzles me and get my blood boiling. Thing is, Villeneuve's manager, one Craig Pollock, has this dream of owning a team. And he sort of convinced Villeneuve that it was his dream, too, and that of his late father Gilles. They tried it before in Formula One and it was a catastrophic failure. Now, ** IF ** this is true, it seems they're trying it again. It might still be sort of an error. Could it be they're in fact 'buying INTO the team' as in some sort of big renting of the "this is my car and my crew, and if I can't find sponsors then "the heck" with me I already paid from my pockets" variety? Maybe someone who knows NASCAR business better could tell me?

I admit I followed F1 a bit closer in the late 80's when Senna and Prost were having their problems. I can see how an egocentric driver manager, who has a driver with Villenueve's means, could set his sights on acquiring a semi-successful team like BDR. NASCAR might not be as impressive a pond to play in as F1 is, but it's no mud puddle, either. |

| Re: Good way for a rookie to get into NASCAR. > ^ Even if it's not F1, there's still cutthroat competition, big boys like Fer ... ergh ... HMS, politics, interests, inconsistencies, and from what I'm hearing costs. Somehow I just don't the like sound of this. |

Somehow I always thought that good racing was performed on the track, not in the pits, on a computer running a chassis analysis program, or in some board room. I wish Eric Bristow and Jockey Wilson were still shooting darts. I'm about ready to return to following that sport. Now there's a sport I love. Simple, easy to understand, affordable, playable by any age and difficult to cheat. |

I thought the following segment from the article Petty linked to was pertinent: Davis said he would like to retain at least part-ownership in the team that bears his name. "That's what I would be the most interested in," Davis said. "We've had a lot of interest. We've had a lot of people come to us. If we do something like this, it will have to be something that adds value and strength to our organization." He said the current state of the sport demands it, noting that many other teams already have taken on partners to try to continue competing with the heavyweights such as Hendrick Motorsports, Roush Fenway Racing, Richard Childress Racing and Dale Earnhardt Inc. "The handwriting is on the wall," Davis said. "We're going to super teams, big teams, whatever the word is. I don't know that the little guys are going to be able to survive."/ Bill said that "he would like to retain at least part ownership. That is a really scarey way to phrase it. The last paragraph stating that he doesn't know that the little guys are going to survive is an indication of total surrender if I've ever heard one. It's just a shame. |
