Tony Stewart wants separate points system?

Tony Stewart, who was at Texas Motor Speedway on Wednesday giving some media members a first-hand look at what race day is like for a driver, said he wants a separate points system for the 12 Chase drivers. "The thing I don't like is that every week there's 31 cars out there that can directly affect the outcome of the championship," said Stewart, who says he otherwise likes the Chase format. "The 12 of us are competing against each other for a championship, so why should their points interfere with our points?" Stewart said that if a Chase driver finishes 43rd, he should actually finish 12th according to the Chase points. It would compact the standings a little more, but it would also make it more difficult for drivers behind in the standings to make up ground. -- Dallas Morning News

Let's see... We now have one group of teams who come to the track each week not worrying about winning, they worry about just getting into the race.

Now, as if being locked into the top twelve positions and getting ten extra points for winning during the first 26 weeks wasn't enough, Tony-baby want there to be two groups of teams who play by totally different rules, points-wise.

Naw, I see nothing unfair and confusing about that!

Tony complained about Paul Menard's dad "buying him a ride and buying championships." Funny, I don't remember Tony whining about Menard's "buying" him an IRL back in 1997?

Hey! I have an idea, Tony. Why not just suggest that NA$CAR go back to a regular season, like they had before the playoffs? How's THAT for a novel idea?

Re: Tony Stewart wants separate points system?

Sounds to me like Tony's theory needs to be counteracted upon by a Rosa Parks type person.

Next Tony will be saying "Step to the rear please".

I think that it might be more on the order of: "When I get within ten feet of any car, said car will be required by NASCAR to pull over and grant me right of way."
Addendum: "No one will be allowed to pit until I have completely the pits."

I think my fellow Hoosier would appreciate both of these rules.

Re: Tony Stewart wants separate points system?

Exactly. You don't see the Royals involved in the Indians vs Red Sox. A seperate points system is needed if you are going to have a playoff system in stock car racing. No playoff system at all sounds good to me, however.

Re: Tony Stewart wants separate points system?

I like Tony, but I don't agree with this ... at all!

Threads like this get me thinking ... Why the hell does NASCAR continue to futz with the rules and people chime in about how to change the rules/points?

Let's compare the "stick and ball" sports, as you guys call it. Hey, let's change the strike out count from 3 to 5! Hey, let's change the walk on balls from 4 to 3! Let's start using the 7-run rule! If a team has the lead by 7, game over!

I'm speaking out of my a$$ here, but haven't the rules of baseball been in place and unchanged for many years? I don't understand why NASCAR had to mess with a good thing. Just opens the doors for more ridiculous suggestions.

Sorry. I can pretty much live with the fact that there are gray areas, but as far as sports go, it should be black and white ... period. The rules of NASCAR change like the wind. Tired of it!

It'll probably take me three months into the 2008 season to get caught up on all the changes they will impose.

I think NASCAR wants us to be confused ...

I will repeat a previous statement: When Moses came down from the mount, the Rules he brought down were etched in stone.
The other professional sports have rules and regulations more or less etched in stone.
NA$CAR's rules are etched in Silly Putty.

I don't believe this fairy tale story about NASCAR actually having rules. If it's true .... show me !!

"Silly" being the operative word here. Shameful.

Silly Putty is something we can see touch and smell. Can you say the same for the infamous NASCAR rule book ??? OK it does stink ... as in smell.

How would it be more difficult? Did he even pass grade school?

Re: Tony Stewart wants separate points system?

Hold on there, buckeroos and buckerettes! What Tony said was reasonable.

He said that there ought to be two races in one when the Chase starts: one for the Chasers where they finish 1-12 regardless of where they actually place on the track and one for the non-chasers where they finish 1-31 regardless of where they actually place on the track - hold on, more on this below.... He also said he would like to see the points tightened up so that the last place Chase car isn't gonna get 400 points back after 5 races, i.e., when the Chase begins: the Chasers are on a different points system from the non-chasers.

I guess if there's gonna be Chasers and non-Chasers, why should their driver points be intermixed? For instance: for Chasers 1st place is 20 pts; 2nd place is 15 pts; 3rd place is 12 pts; 4th is 10 pts; 5th is 8pts; 6th thru 12th are 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 pts respectively. But non-chasers are awarded points according to the normal scale, i.e., there's an "A" class and a "B" class each with a different points system and an "Overall". Drivers get points for their finish in their class, while owners get points by their finish overall.

I'd go even farther than Tony with this: when the Chase begins, only the Chasers are guaranteed a starting spot in the race, everyone else gets in on time alone (no provisionals.) that gives the non-Chosen a 10 race chance to race for the all important Chosen 5 race exemption for the next year .. guys like Boris and Almendinger at least have a chance to make a race by turning in a good time.

Re: Tony Stewart wants separate points system?

Enough already! It's a ridiculous theory and will never happen! If it does, that will surely be the end of my fascination with NASCAR. The rules and points system are screwed up enough as it is!

I love him, but Tony needs to get a grip! Why not just toss the non-Chase drivers off the track once The Chase starts? Crazy!

I do like that idea. It would give everyone out of or just in the top 35 a fighting chance.
