Favoritism In NASCAR

with all the speculation that nascar gives jeff gordon andHSM special treatment in todays nascar.

I wlonder if you guys/gals think nascar gave petty entp. and RCR/dale sr. special treatment.

petty won 7 cup titles, after his last title (79?) dale showed up and won in 80. when dale won his last (94?) jeff won in 95(?).

is this a trend. please back up your answer/opinion rather then just bash.

i think so, without a doubt ..... though i dont know to what degree

and i have 2 prime examples

Petty never really got his 200th win, yet the win was never taken away

as for Sr. seems a little odd NASCAR is only now making a stink about bashing people to pass them, yet Sr made his living doing this ....... is it a coincidence they wait until he is gone to bring it up ?

before anyone decides to attack me, please know i hold both drivers in the highest regard and consider them both two of the best of all time .... but yes i think they got the benefit of the doubt now and then

I actually think both are valid points. I belive the King had an oversized engine for that 200th win.

And I've said the same thing about Srs tactics, and how all of a sudden it's wrong now that he's gone. It is well known that he had Bill Jr's ear on a lot of topics, and there is no doubt in my mind that he was not judged as harshly over the last half of his career. He did get in some trouble early in his career, but not so much in the latter years.

Dale also smoothed the rough edges a bit, and didn't resort so much to the "Intimidator" tactics.

Re: favotisium for nascar

Oh, and back on topic to todays racers, of course there is special treatment, to a certain degree.

Not when it come to breaking the rules with the cars themselves, but when it comes to tactics, or even the langueage, there is.

Just look at Dale Jr talking about drinking beer. But when Stewart talked about drinking a case after a win, NASCAR didn't like it. BS

didnt NASCAR actually make that ruling and take away the money and the points but not the actual win so he could retire at 200 ?

I'd have to go try and look that up. I can't remember for sure anymore. That does ring true, off the top of my head, though!

Re: Favoritism In NASCAR

Petty won his 198th race at the Miller High Life 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1983. But he was caught using an oversized motor. So NASCAR fined him $35,000 and docked him 104 championship points, but did not take the win away from him. The next year he won his 199th and 200th races.

Thanks for clearing the fog from my memory! How could I have forgotten that.

Folks were thinking win 200 was a fix since the President was there.

Not likely in my book. I can't see Cale letting anyone pass him for the lead!!

Re: Favoritism In NASCAR

the only time I can remember nascar taking away a win was in 92 (?) the took the sears point win from ricky rudd and gave it to davey allison , which ricky spun while in the hair pin just before the checkers.

Re: Favoritism In NASCAR

Well of course they show favoritism. There is not a top rated sports figure that doesn't get some slack cut for them. I really don't think that NASCAR would try to pull a stunt such as this.

Well I'm saying yes but not to the same degree that others feel. Michael Jordan got away with fouls that rookies wouldn't and I think that Dale Sr may have gotten away with antics on the track that others would not have. Same scenario would apply today with todays popular drivers.
