Lights at Martinsville?

Clay Campbell, president of Martinsville Speedway, questions whether adding lights would make business sense because his track's Cup dates are typically in early April (it will be late March next year) and mid-October, when it can be downright chilly at night. "The thing that would push it over the edge for us maybe doing lights would be the other events that we do... like the Modified race and the Late Models," he said. Adding temporary lights presents issues, Campbell said, because they take up so much room. -- The Virginian-Pilot

Re: Lights at Martinsville?

the cup dates at martinsville are to early and to late , the night air is quite chilly in this area those times of the year.

so lights wouldn't help the cup dates, now when they used to run may or june, or when ever it was hot, the heat was alway a big issue for that race. remember the heat camaras, and winner sitting on the ground in victory lane.

also MV alway sells out, so whats the push for lights.

now I will say I love the night races on the short tracks, we need more.(sorry local tracks)

I would think if they had their choice they would but I also believe there are many other factors involved. Cost being one. Some communities may have noise restrictions after certain hours. Would the races all become night races to justify the purchase and if not would you mind HIGHER ticket prices to cover the expense ?? Would liability insurance rise for a night race ?? (people wandering around darkened parking lots etc.) Loss of revenue for local Saturday/Sunday night racing.

Seems like a ton of variables when all they really need to do is make earlier starting times and be willing to cancel the race until tomorrow. Granted those answers won't cover every situation but I'm not real sure lights are the answer for every track.

Re: Lights at Martinsville?

I know I've only been to a handful of tracks, but night race at richmond beats baking in the heat all day at dover, and the rock.

Oh I agree with that aspect Once .. but as a track owner is it a fiscally responsible move ???

Re: Lights at Martinsville?

yes, with a sell out crowd at every cup race, there is no need/want(can't think of the word Iam looking for) to add lights, it won't earn anymore money unless ticket prices go up.

Re: Lights at Martinsville?

i mean if there's a long red flag, they can still finish the race at night. like every short track should be concluded!

Re: Lights at Martinsville?

Didn't a similar debate go on with baseball long ago? (yeah, different sports so it's not the greatest comparison) I'd think that it would help for some races, particularly this time of year when there is so little daylight.

Re: Lights at Martinsville?

Well with baseball most all of the games are under the lights.

Re: Lights at Martinsville?

i was thinking that nascar should start something where any nascar fan who wants lights at every track could donate money to the ISC to put lights at every track!

That pretty much guarantees we'll never see lights.

Re: Lights at Martinsville?

Why spend all that money installing lights. Just start the races at 8 AM and then you should have plenty of day light to finish it.

I don't much cotton to puttin' a roof over the track neither. I say a good set of all-weather radials on them cars and we wouldn't have to stop the race everytime it sprinkles a little bit!

I guess I mean that with ticket prices as outrageous as they are I don't foresee to many people DONATING money for lights. Not much chance I'd do it.
