The big one So how can you not love Talladega? Yes for you purists it is a restrictor plate race which "restricts" your joy in watching, smelling and listening to pure unbridaled horsepower but... What I love about this race is that at any second anything can happen changing the entire complexion of the race. While that is true at all tracks it is more so at Dega. It is crazy fast, intensly close and a blast to watch and you find yourself admiring the driver's skill, wondering how they just avoided "the big one" and when it's coming. Obviously safety is a concern but then again it's that dance with danger that energizes racing, it's what limits the sport to a select few competitors, and it's that dance with the edge that brings on the rush of adrenaline. Talladega brings out the best in what watching racing as a fan, is all about.

Re: The big one I'm surprised at how many people hate the plates. I remember races at Daytona and Dega without em. Major yawn fests. The cars would get all spread out, only about three or four in the lead pack and they'd just ride that way all day (kind like california but in a draft). You can't begin to compare that with evey position changing each lap, from first to last and back in 5! Lets go racin boys!

Re: The big one I get real torn about restrictor plate racing. You're correct when you say that if it weren't for the plates there would only be 4 - 6 cars in the lead pack. The upside to that is when there is an accident, and yes there will be one, only a couple cars are involved since they are all spread out. In the group we get that spectacular accident that sends at least one car end over end about 5 times and involves far to many innocent drivers. Yeah I'm one of the ones who gets a rush when the accident happens but I'm always in fear that someone will die. Seems like there should be some middle ground where NASCAR and the teams could meet to resolve the issues.

Re: The big one Lower the banking?? You'd have the most boring race ever created! That or you would only force them to slow a bit in the corners you'd still have the same problems in the trioval and backstretch. It just wouldn't solve the issues.

Most Cup drivers agree that is the only way to stop the huge multi-car pileups at Daytona and Talladega. Those tracks are way too long and steeply banked for todays high downforce cars. Racing isn't about a pack of 40 cars running around tied to each other just waiting for a minor slipup which can take out half the field. |

Re: The big one I missed the truck race at daytona this year, I know they where going to use a different plate that was thicker and had a tapered hole. this was supposed to give some thottle responce back. how did this work ??? I think a heavier car and /or skinnier tires
