It's not like NASCAR ever done anything strange/silly/weird, like ... killing the stock cars.
No sir, never.

That statement and this topic are like apples and oranges. Every series does something "strange/silly/weird". Yes sir ... always.

So why should anything surprise us then ?!

Re: Drivers don't like Villeneuve Debut in 'Dega

everytime I hear an open wheel star stepping right into cup, I remember al unser jr. at daytona. saying something about "these guy are pushing beating and banging, that not how I've ever raced" and the wieght to traction in cup is way lopesided compared to open wheel.

JPM has done well, but he was also a stand out in open wheel yes??
just don't know that they are ready for a dega atmosphere for thier first cup experience.

Re: Drivers don't like Villeneuve Debut in 'Dega

Well, let's see. I'm "about" middle aged, so I'd appeal to many age groups, young and old; I'm female so maybe the girls would tune in more just to see what I could do; I'm female so maybe the guys would tune in just to see what I could do; and most importantly - I have absolutely the same experience driving a cup car as Jacques does. He drives a mean CART, I drive a mean kart - just a few less horses and a smaller track (behind the mini golf course and Mobile station. ) Wow, I can be a NASCAR Cup driver, too! Bring lots of emegency vehicles and sign me up! Especially at 'Dega. Yee haa, seriously, glad I won't be a driver in that race. I think Villenueve's a great driver, but please, let's use some common sense here! Oops, wait, NASCAR, common sense = conflicting terms not often used in the same sentence.

+1
Best way of putting it.

But I also disagree, single-seater are not just glorified karts.

I agree with you here, DOF. I'm just kidding around, but I love open wheel racing. They are certainly not glorified karts. My personal opinion is that it takes a whole lot of finesse to pilot any open wheel type car. Beatin' and bangin' gets you killed when those tires hit. I think cars with fenders are a lot more forgiving. Talking with local drivers who have driven both cars, they tell me the same thing. To quote one driver "getting in a car with nothing over your head and nothing to protect your tires and going *150 mph within inches of other nutjobs doing the same thing - well, honey, that's the ultimate rush!"

*He was referring to speeds on a 5/8 mile oval in a supermodified.

I'm as big an open wheel fan as a stock car fan. I don't follow it like I used to though, sadly, unless it's at the local track.

I agree. A dumbass doesn't win an FIA World Championship. To me it sounds suspiciously like some of the more notable NASCAR primadonnas are worried that yet another hi-profile driver is going to come in and "steal" some of their camera time.

But, I could be wrong, too...

Me say Bad juu-juu here. No doubt some $ has greased the palm of the resident idiot in Daytona. I shudder at the outcome of this unwise move.

While I agree with that, I do think he should have worked his way thru
Cup-Lite and/or CTS.

And they were only fighting for 1 point. But a wet track and determined drivers is what real racing is all about these days in F1 not FIA stupid regulations.
Take a look at these to see what I mean:
YouTube - F.1: Alonso supera a Massa en el GP de Europa
YouTube - Alonso Onboard Hungaroring 2006

Old GP drivers however would disapprove, as in the old days there were rules both written and unwritten against such driving/racing because it ended up in serious injuries and deaths.
But with today's cars and tracks it's a different thing (checks and balances I guess).
