NASCAR taking Edwards car for closer inspection

Should NASCAR verify its results, Carl Edwards likely faces a 25-point penalty that would drop him to sixth in the standings heading to Kansas Speedway. A decision is expected by Tuesday. Johnny Sauter and Kyle Busch both lost 25 points for the same infraction after a race earlier this year. Series officials don't believe Edwards' car was too low because of on-track contact. Officials could not say that about most cars. NASCAR will take the car to its research and development center in Concord, N.C. "It seems like it was more like Daytona or Talladega today," said Greg Zipadelli, crew chief for Stewart, about the carnage. -- The Virginian-Pilot

Re: NASCAR taking Edwards car for closer inspection

I don't get it.

If a car passes pre-race inspection, it goes directly onto the track, right? So how can the car fail inspection for being too low post-race? Can they actually lower a car during a pit stop? If so, and could lead to an illegal set up, they shouldn't have the ability to do so.

And by the way, why don't they inspect all the cars, or at least the top-ten. I wonder how many other "infractions" they might find post-race!

I'm losing my flippin' mind!

Pretty sure I heard one of the experts explain this before, Penny, so let me see if I can get this right. I think the car naturally lowers during the course of the race, so even if it's at the right height before the race, different forces and wear and tear will force it lower. Now, let's see if I'm actually remembering right.

Thanks. However, if a car "naturally lowers during the course of a race", how can it be found illegal post-race based on "nature"?

I don't get it ... but that's ok ...

Hopefully at the NASCAR R&D center in Charlotte they will find out why one side was lower.

I would think the springs were of lower quality ( no pun intended)
