The Dale Earnhardt Jr. 2008 number issue won't die. After his stepmother wouldn't give up his familiar No. 8, Yates Newman Haas Lanigan Racing reportedly nixed Earnhardt's bid for No. 38. That's good. He doesn't need to drive a car with the #38 on the side of it.
One of the reasons he's going to HMS is to start a new chapter in his life, hopefully a much better one than the one he's closing the pages on. One could title this new chapter "Dale Earnhardt, Jr - Standing On His Own." If he were to drive the #38 you'd have to change that chapter title to "Dale Earnhardt, Jr - Standing With The Intimidator." Well, maybe one day he'll write that chapter in his life, and he should. But for now, he's better off leaving it in the future chapter's folder lying on the draft table.

You know it isn't going to matter what number he drives, someone is going to make some connection back to the 8 or the 3. If he drives the 25 then you subtract the 2 from the 5 then you have the number 3 !!! If you add the 2 and the 5 you get 7 as in the number of championships ... it just goes on and on.

I saw that too, but I'm a little baffled by it. The headline says: DaleJr to #25 team [new number], but doesn't say anything about it in the article. I wonder if they're guessing since Casey's going to the #5, Jr must be going to the #25.

I wonder why he doesn't take the #33, it's used in Busch not Cup. His own number with his dads at the beginning and end.
