Penny, I just saw this post or I would have addressed it first, but honestly, this is what I'm talking about in my other post. I am not a casual fan or non-fan of Sr. or NASCAR, and my NASCAR history is a-ok. I resent it when subtle put downs are thrown over simple differences of opinion. No one ever addresses it on here, but I find these little digs by not just you, but many on here, at times I'm sure I must include myself, to be what's annoying. Dale Earnhardt., Sr. was not a god, he was a man. Your opinion is otherwise, but I don't go telling you to do your research or telling me I'm not a fan. I just don't see it your way, that's all. Don't insult my intelligence because I may disagree. I'm not at all angry, so don't take it that way, but I don't want to get angry because I have enough real problems in my life and defintalely have some perspective. You know what they say about throwing stones in glass houses.

Re: Legend of Earnhardt Sr. grows over time

I remember that during the mid-80's to late 90's time frame there were very few NASCAR followers who were "on the fence" about Earnhardt Sr. I seem to remember that it was about an even split; 50% hated the guy and 50% idolized him. Even on his worst day I don't think he ever gained the amount of animosity felt toward Darrell Waltrip.

That being said, the number of detractors has decreased significantly since his death. From my observations it would appear that his loyal followers have grown quite a bit since 2001. I, personally, have seen statements like: "I'm a Dale Sr. fan; I've been following NASCAR since 2003?"

FWIW, I thought the guy was a talented driver with a burning desire to win. Though I saw him cry twice (first when he almost killed Rusty at Talladega, and second when they pulled him out of the car at the Brickyard because of injuries suffered in a previous race), I NEVER heard him whine about any racing incident. Out of a field of 43, there are probably 42 drivers out there today who would do well to emulate Dale Sr. on that matter!

I have absolutely no doubt that everyone here who expresses a sincere opinion about Dale Sr. has held that feeling since before his death. However, the entire thing reminds me of two things:

To hear guys tell it, it would appear that 75% of all able bodied American males born between 1950 and 1955 served in-country in Viet Nam. This number goes up to 95% of those who were actually in the service between the years of 1967-1972.

From the number of people who claim to have been on Max Yasgur's farm for Woodstock, there must have been in excess of 5 million souls there?

Re: Legend of Earnhardt Sr. grows over time

That was a mighty fine video. I wasn't a Earnhardt fan. I was on the other side of the fence but I didn't want him hurt let alone killed. I don't put dead people down. So I am still not a fan but I don't talk bad about him. He could drive you had to give him that.

Well. No need to take this so personally and seriously. I in no way, subtle or otherwise, meant my post to be a put down of you or anyone else. Insult your intelligence? I don't understand where that's coming from. That's quite a strong accusation.

And for the record, I do NOT think Dale is a God.

I'll just leave it at that.

I think for the most part even if people didn'tlike him(like myself), we all agreed he was a hell of a driver.
