| Re: Legend of Earnhardt Sr. grows over time I remember that during the mid-80's to late 90's time frame there were very few NASCAR followers who were "on the fence" about Earnhardt Sr. I seem to remember that it was about an even split; 50% hated the guy and 50% idolized him. Even on his worst day I don't think he ever gained the amount of animosity felt toward Darrell Waltrip. That being said, the number of detractors has decreased significantly since his death. From my observations it would appear that his loyal followers have grown quite a bit since 2001. I, personally, have seen statements like: "I'm a Dale Sr. fan; I've been following NASCAR since 2003?" FWIW, I thought the guy was a talented driver with a burning desire to win. Though I saw him cry twice (first when he almost killed Rusty at Talladega, and second when they pulled him out of the car at the Brickyard because of injuries suffered in a previous race), I NEVER heard him whine about any racing incident. Out of a field of 43, there are probably 42 drivers out there today who would do well to emulate Dale Sr. on that matter! I have absolutely no doubt that everyone here who expresses a sincere opinion about Dale Sr. has held that feeling since before his death. However, the entire thing reminds me of two things: To hear guys tell it, it would appear that 75% of all able bodied American males born between 1950 and 1955 served in-country in Viet Nam. This number goes up to 95% of those who were actually in the service between the years of 1967-1972. From the number of people who claim to have been on Max Yasgur's farm for Woodstock, there must have been in excess of 5 million souls there?

And for the record, I do NOT think Dale is a God. I'll just leave it at that.
