Re: RYR asked Nascar to transfer the 38......... I think it was a very nice gesture of Robert to offer the 38 # to Junior, so that he would still have his "8" and a "3" to honor his dad. It doesn't bother me to think that the 38 could move to a different team, that # doesn't have alot of "history". I certainly wouldn't mind seeing the 28 back on the car. It might be a different story altogether if they would have quit using the 28 right away after Davey, but it was still used and raced by several people. Let's see the 28 back on the track, it will still be different because it would no longer be sponsored by Texaco, as it always was from the beginning of Davey's career. Give us the 28 back, send the 38 to Junior, maybe he can give it a "history"!! ![]() Sure do miss you Davey!!

Re: RYR asked Nascar to transfer the 38......... Seems they are now saying this won't happen. I thought it was a better choice than the 81 Jr has said he wants. The number 81 just doesn't seem right to me. Ah well, that is his choice.

Re: RYR asked Nascar to transfer the 38......... UPDATE: Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Monday that Robert Yates Racing and Hendrick Motorsports are discussing a transfer of that number for 2008. The #38 currently is being used by David Gilliland. No formal request has been made to the NASCAR, which has to ultimately approve the transfer. Officials at Hendrick Motor Sports, Robert Yates Racing and JR Motorsports could not be reached for comment. Should RYR give up #38, it still has the rights to the #28 that was last used in 2002 with Ricky Rudd.(ESPN.com)(8-27-2007) UPDATE2: Marty Smith said on ESPN2's NASCAR Now that it is unlikely the #38 will be transferred from Yates to Hendrick.(8-28-2007)

Re: RYR asked Nascar to transfer the 38......... Doug Yates confirmed his team has been approached by a representative of Hendrick Motorsports about securing the No. 38 for Dale Earnhardt Jr. next year, but if Yates gets his way, there will be no such transfer. Earnhardt recently was denied the opportunity to take the No. 8 from Dale Earnhardt Inc. to Hendrick and now is considering other number options. The No. 38 currently is being used by David Gilliland. "Dale Jr., since he can't have what he wants, he might want the 38," said Yates, president of Yates/Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing. "They're asking for the 38, and the 38 and 88 are our numbers. "It's almost a little strange. It's like somebody asking if they can take your girlfriend or your wife out. We feel we're going to have the 38 and 88 [next year]." Earnhardt said last weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway that fans will "get excited about what we're going to do.'' "I know my fans are going to enjoy it,'' he said of his new number. "I wish I could be in the No. 8. I don't think that's something that goes away or I get used to. The possibilities I'm looking at I like a lot and are pretty cool and I think I can make an identity with.'' While Yates said he is not interested in parting with the number, doesn't everything in the sport have a price tag? "That's my dad's side of it," Yates said, referring to his father, Robert Yates. "But for me, these are our numbers, and we're set with them."

| Re: RYR asked Nascar to transfer the 38......... Dilner does it again! Someone refresh my memory it it seems to me that either late last season or earlier this one Bob Dilner "broke a news scoop" which proved to be a figment of his active imagination. (Someone PLEASE help me on this one. PLEASE) Robin Miller, late of the Indianapolis Star, had a bad habit of dreaming up news and the Star cut him loose. Now he has some minor-league blog and does guest shots on Dave Despain's "Wind Tunnel." More and more I'm finding the organizations which purport themselves, and their employees, to be professional, are actually kidding themselves, and us.
