Re: Poll,What number should NASCAR retire?

this is about as tough a question as there is

of course the King is the King ......... his accomplishments will likely never be equaled in total ...... though it was a different time back then and some may say some of his achivements had to do with his bank-roll

Dale Sr obviously died in the #3 ...... though he isnt the only driver to die in a racecar ........ so i dont think that reasoning holds water

i dont really know that anyone can make a conclusive case for either that everyone can agree on

i picked the #3 for selfish sentimental reasons, simple as that

Re: Poll,What number should NASCAR retire?

Not to argue what you are asking but my question would be why retire any number ? If you have a good enough answer for why either of these should be retired then what about the numbers of so many other drivers over the past 50 plus years.

Dale was great and Richard is the King but what about Fireball Roberts, Fred Lorenzen, Benny Parsons, Darrell Waltrip, Rusty, Alan Kulwicki, Davey Allison, David Pearson .....

To many others to even mention. No number should be permanently retired.

Re: Poll,What number should NASCAR retire?

I agree that no number should be retired but that was not my question in this poll. Also, as NASCAR controlls the numbers and lets owners use them then I would say,use it or lose it owners.Put the #3,#28 etc... back on the track, period.

You are correct and I apologize about taking the poll in a different direction. I'm just very adamant about retirement of numbers. I would guess that as long as NASCAR is getting a yearly payment for numbers they don't care if they are used or not. Andy Petree holds the lease on the #33. He's an announcer (?) now. Figure that one out.

I guess that "neither" counts as a "zero," eh?

Now, THAT is a statement I can happily agree with. Good call, PB.

Too bad it'll probably never happen.

Re: Poll,What number should NASCAR retire?

I voted for the #3, because there were only two options in the poll. No surprise there

In reality though, they shouldn't retire any number. Too many drivers have used the same numbers since the beginning to do that. And if you start retiring numbers, where do you draw the line for the criteria?

What you could retire though, I suppose, is the design of a number.
For example: RCR and the Earnhardt estate own the rights to various #3 logos used during Earnhardt's lifetime. RCR owns the trademark on the #3 design, which they registered on July 23rd, 1996. You could retire the #3 design (the block number 3, trimmed in red, leaning to the left) which we all now immediately recognize as Dale's number. But you'd still keep the #3 for anyone else to use with a different design, as long as it wasn't similar to the retired one.

I applaud your response. A voice of sanity and rationality.
