Points System I'm not sure this subject has come up before so I'll bring it up (again ???) Are you for or against the new point system that entails the chase ? http://www.nascar.com/2004/news/opin..._if/index.html This is an interesting article that tells how the championships might have come out under the new and/or old system. Interesting !!!!!!

Re: Points System Thanks for the heads-up on the article...enjoyed, but like the author mentioned, we in the Earnhardt nation are please that the French-fried leadership in NASCAR did not mess with the points system back then...While I am probably deemed too opinionated, I feel the system did not need tweeking...it was just plain fine the way it was. This is another in a very long list of "pre-packaged" items that the micro-management of the Cup series is suffering under the new, and recent, misguided supervision. If you cannot read through these lines, I don't like the new points system. But I do love the old-fashioned racing that I grew up on and head-to-head competition was the name of the game...not this watered down, everyone-has-to-be nice-while-you try-to-demonstrate-a-competetive-spirit! Smoke and Jr seem to stand alone in maintaining individualism and personality...should not negate Martin, who deserves at least a win this year... Good thread idea...but boils my water..

Re: Points System I'll go the other way wamp. I'm a long time fan too and the other system was fine for what it was. The problem with it was that it often was decided well before the end of the season. It rarely involved more than three drivers with a realistic chance of winning the cup. It also slighted winning altogether (something the new one does as well). Why DW beat out Elliot one year. I like that the new system allows a team that had a slow start or a run of bad luck back into the fray. The old system you were toast. What I don't like is that it makes things nearly even with ten to go. I'd like to see a little larger gap between 1st and 10th. The guy that has worked his tail off all year and then gets crashed out at Dega and blows a tire at Texas loses all that he's built. Then again it's the same way in all sports. Just look at the Indy Colts of last season. Talk all over about a perfect NFL season then when it counts they lose one playoff game and done. No perfection (lost earlier) and no super bowl either. I like that the current system gives something more to watch at years end. I really like that Smoke is a good closer! P.S. The comparisons of who would have won the cup are fun but then again you really can't say that. Teams race differently depending on the circumstances.

Re: Points System I think the ten race format is good for NASCAR it builds some really good drama. I just wish they would have taken the top 15. I understand why they did the within 400 points. Because in the past no driver had came from 400 back with 10 races left to win. But with the top 15 with 10 to go would be even more interesting. Then my #26 car might get in
