Driver killed in Thompson Speedway crash

Two brothers competing in a car race at the Thompson Motor Speedway crashed Thursday night, leaving one dead. John Blewett III of Howell, N.J., died after his racing car and the car of his brother, Jimmy Blewett, hit a wall in the 107th lap of the 150-lap NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. John Blewett's car ended up on top of his brother's car, said Woody Pitkat, a driver who said he was directly behind John Blewett.
"Jimmy got out of his car. He was yelling and screaming. He was just a wreck," Pitkat said in a telephone interview Friday. "He was yelling at people to get him out of the car. He was running around, which is understandable."
John Blewett, who suffered head and neck injuries, had to be extricated from the car and was taken to Hubbard Regional Hospital in Webster, Mass., where he was declared dead, state police said. He was 33.
Pitkat, 28, of Stafford, said he estimates the speed of the two cars at more than 100 mph at the time of the crash. "I was laying back because they were racing pretty hard," he said. "I was pretty much on cruise control."
He said his car was hit from the rear in the crash that involved several other cars.
A spokesman for NASCAR said the Blewett brothers are veteran race car drivers.

Re: Driver killed in Thompson Speedway crash

Blewett was a "Jersey Boy", vis a vis Martin Truex, Ray Evernham, etc. Raced at Wall Stadium (In Memory of John Blewett III) by the Jersey shore. The current track champion he is.

There was a discussion on this site around driver vs. racer. John was a racer and a better definition than I could ever provide of racer may be found via the thread relating to his death on the speedway web site.

A True Racer is Lost After John Blewett, III Passes Away

My first "team" as an owner was at the Quartermidget track on the grounds. Four cars, two drivers (My sons). QM drivers always had free admission to the "big track" so we got our fill of Blewett and the gang.

If anyone is ever in the area when Wall has a show on, stop in. Not likely to disappoint.

John will be missed.
