Do you guys remember when the next to the last race of the season was at Phoenix? It was a combined event of Winston Cup and Winston West. It always fell on the opening weekend of elk hunting up here in Wa. Many of the guys that were not in the points chase in the west would go hunting. We usually did. Only got to go there 3 times. So you can see what became important when the last lap was run and we were not in the hunt for the title. We got in the hunt for the elusive Wapiti. Of course I had to show them all up and get my elk on opening morning, before 9:00 A.M. for 6 six years in a row. Great things come about when in the mountains. Bench racing made its appearance almost nightly. Always made some excuse to make the 50 mile trip into town on monday to get the paper and see what the finish was. Then the speculation of who did what and why was always good for the rest of the week. Whith me being the "Great white hunter" I would always wind up being camp ***** for the rest of the week. That meant policeing the camp, vacuum the motorhome and cook either breakfast or lunch. Yes guy's, we have a motorhome to go elk hunting in. No tents or trailers for us. Golf carts would make their appearance when it wasnt predicted for snow. Makes things easy and quiet when sneaking up the mountain side in the morning. Otherwise it was a caravan of 4x4's every morning. Roughing it is leaving the steak sauce at home dont ya know.
