Letart, Knaus Return

Letart, Knaus Return
Letarte returns as #24 crew chief after 6 week suspension: This week's 3M Performance 400 at Michigan International Speedway marks the return of crew chief Steve Letarte for Jeff Gordon, but the #24 team has not missed a beat in his six-race absence. In those six races, Gordon posted top-10 finishes in each of them - including four top-fives - and accumulated more points than any other driver, increasing his lead in the point standings by 173. "Jeff Meendering did a tremendous job filling in for Steve, but it'll be great to have Steve back," Gordon said. "I've been impressed with Steve's ability to call a race, and he has given me great cars this year."(Performance PR Plus)

Knaus returns to #48 team after 6 week suspension: #48 Lowe's Chevy driver Jimmie Johnson and the Nextel Cup Series travel to Michigan International Speedway this weekend for Sunday's 400-mile race. Johnson finished fifth and second in the last two races at Pocono and Watkins Glen. This weekend, Crew Chief Chad Knaus rejoins the team after a six-race absence. Johnson said, ""I have been proud of the team and what we have done without Chad. I think we have kept our pace up. But, we really look forward to having him back this week getting everything in line and getting ready for the Chase. I have to give our guys a lot of credit by staying focused throughout these six races."(GMR Marketing PR)

Yea, Knaus and his protege' return until they get busted again, and have their hands slapped once more. Gordo sure didnt miss Letarte. Na$cars penalties for rules infraction totally suck.

Wasn't there another owner who had two chiefs suspended this year? I can't remember for sure. Evernham's had problems, maybe that's who I'm thinking of.

Re: Letart, Knaus Return

Kenny Francis and Robbie Reiser, the crew chiefs for Kasey Kahne and Matt Kenseth, were suspended a total of four races and fined $50,000 each for violations discovered during post-qualifying inspection on Sunday.

In addition, Kahne and Kenseth were docked 50 championship points and their car owners, Ray Evernham and Jack Roush, were docked 50 owners' points.

Rodney Childers and Josh Browne, the crew chiefs for Scott Riggs and Elliott Sadler -- Kahne's teammates at Evernham Motorsports -- were suspended two races and fined $25,000.

The drivers were docked 25 championship points each and Evernham was docked 25 owner points for each.

It is the first time in Cup history that four crew chiefs were sent home from one race.

Thanks, tkj. It looks like HMS isn't the only owner with multiple cheaters, just the one everyone seems to remember the most, including me.

I take it Mr. Evernham is not able to think for himself or determine right from wrong on his own? I'm betting he's capable of independant thought, regardless of where he came from. His little affair with an employee tells me he might not be a man of highest moral character, if you know what I mean.

I don't think it's just that Hendrick's is the only one that everybody remembers, they're just the main ones that gets caught over and over and over and over, etc.

Re: Letart, Knaus Return

Cheating didn't just start happening this year. Best I can recall, it's been going on since the first days of NASCAR back in the 40's.
Actually, longer, because moonshiners were cheating by making hot rods out of their cars to get away from the revenuers and the cops.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to justify it or excuse it by no means, just trying to add a little perspective

If NASCAR really wanted to stop rule infractions, they'd change the "slap on the wrist" penalties.
You get caught cheating, the car gets parked for the race. Load it into the hauler and head for home.
That would get their attention.

I agree. And instead of 50 or 100 point reduction, try taking 300 and see how quick you get their attention.

I wasn't saying that he isn't able to think for himself, I was just saying that he "came" from a known cheating team, he has past experience in the department of cheating.
