I agree.
but it's been the practice in auto racing for many, many years. in fact, if you remember, they also used to put small letters after a number (still do in the modified ranks). in the Watkins Glen race, Boris and Carpentier had a "1" in front of their number .. on paper, so the 3 digit number is alive and well (on paper) in NASCAR. part of the problem is the amount of real estate the numbers occupy. NASCAR mandates the location of contingency decals (on the fender in front of the door number) and the number. the contingency decals are already encroaching into the "number" area on the door leaving little room for a third number. but since NASCAR controls the numbers, they have sole authority on which numbers are available and which aren't.
besides, if they took all the leading "0"s away, what would Reutimann have on the side of his car? a decimal point?
