NASCAR won't punish Montoya or Harvick for shoving match?

NASCAR has announced that it will not penalize Nextel Cup Series drivers Juan Pablo Montoya or Kevin Harvick for their shoving match at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) following a crash last Sunday. Montoya and Harvick got together going into the first turn on a restart after Martin Truex Jr. tapped the rear of Montoya's car in the closing laps. Montoya and Harvick then got out of their crumpled cars and had a heated exchange. "I think our fans get a big kick out of incidents that happen like Kevin Harvick and Juan Pablo Montoya doing their toe dancing and helmet grabbing after the incident on the track," said Jim Hunter, NASCAR vice president. "Actually, I thought it was pretty funny. "Most old football players would tell you that you never take your helmet off, and I noticed that neither one of them took off their helmets or HANS Devices. That was raw emotion. No harm was done. No foul was committed. "It was just two tremendously competitive individuals venting a little bit of frustration, and I'm sure it will pass." -- The News Journal

That's a bull crap answer and they know it. In football you touch that helmet and bingo there is a penalty. There is a reason for not grabbing a helmet in football and it applies to any sport that wears helmets of that type. Once again NASCAR has shown how inequitable they are in dispensing justice. Say a bad word and it costs you money and points but endanger a competitor and that's fine.

"I think our fans get a kick out of incidents like this".......????????!!!!

I'm sure that they do get a kick out of it but this appears to be totally inconsistant with severe penalties recently imposed.

apparently fighting is part of the image that NASCAR wants to portray

Atleast they didn't swing. All they did was pi$$ and moan and push. It would have been different if they had got out of their cars and just thrown down and started swingin for the fences. To me it's a big difference. In school I never got in trouble if I was just arguing and pushing back and forth. If I drew back and decked the guy then I was escorted to the principals. Same deal out in public with the cops(atleast in my neck of the woods), as long as haymakers weren't thrown, I didn't visit Bubba that night.

I did think it was funny. I also thought Gordon shoving Matt was funny. Not so funny that Gordon was fined for the same thing these guys aren't being fined for.

I cannot believe Jim Hunter. What an idiot! Sure! Let's encourage more of this behavior by saying that fans get a kick out of it.

Give me a flippin' break!

I don't think either incident was funny.

The difference was Matt was going over to apologize to Jeff Gordon. He should have let him cool down a bit more.

Harvick and JPM were both in the heat of the moment... its a good thing they didn't throw down.

But I agree, they should have been fined like Gordon was for consistency's sake.

I didn't mean that I thought it was funny in a way that I enjoyed seeing it. I meant funny in the way that they looked like kids on a school yard.
To me it shouldn't mattered if it's heat of the moment or after they cooled down some.

Sure we love it, just like we only watch the races for the wrecks. At least that what people tell us. Actually I think the funniest thing was it looked like Montoya had a load in his drawers. Can't they find him a fire suit that fits?
