Re: NASCAR in Primetime

Wow! Did that S*CK or what?

What the heck was the point other than to prove to me yet again that I hate Montoya. What did he call himself? A pompous little Columbian or something like that? Well, he got that right. Everything that came out of his mouth added zero value. ZERO. It's official. I hate him! There's no turning back now.

Somehow, ABC should have had a lead in. At first, I thought it was good that they didn't, but I just don't get the point. And I'm a NASCAR fan. I'm sure the non-fans changed the channel. Far too segmented with no commentary.

Mark Martin was great. I even enjoyed Sauter. The fan commentary was fantastic and spot on. But ... I should have watched "Rescue Me" instead.

Disappointed ...

Re: NASCAR in Primetime

I think they used every stereotypical NASCAR fan they could find (the biker's, for example), threw in a few African Americans and women for diversity and made a commercial for NASCAR. I thought the best part was Gordon and Montoya playing verbal one upmanship over the radios. A lot of chest beating from a couple drivers whose heads were apparently too big for their helmets that day, especially JPM. I don't hold that against either of them, though. They were both racing hard and not willing to give up any real estate. I'm ok with that.

I tried to watch it [Talladega Nites] twice and have yet to make it through. It appeals, IMNSVHO, to the lowest common denominator in NASCAR fandom. As far as reality, credibility and helping the sport, it ranks right down there with Kenny Roger's "Six Pack," and Tom Cruise's "Days of Thunder."

After fifty years (my first racing movie was Clark Gable's 1950 "To Please a Lady,") of trying to find a movie which gives some semblance of what racing is actually like, the closest I've been able to come was James Garner's 1966 "Grand Prix." THAT film I recommend HIGHLY.

Re: NASCAR in Primetime

yeah, but Garner was actually a racer when he filmed it, so that in itself lends credibility to the movie. I agree, it's a keeper.

I concur. Watching Johnny Sauter and Mark Martin almost come to tears isn't my concept of prime time entertainment.

Also, any non-Juan Pablo Montoya type who claims that the media is ramming his hispanic persona down our throats, now has a solid leg to stand on. (FWIW, I don't think that they did before but they sure have a decent arguement now!)

think ya left just in time .. Tue was 100+, yesterday mid 90's before turning very muggy prior to the rain last night...

Alaska will be nice this time of year...so I hear - never been there except for a 2AM touchdown at Anchorage on a dependents flight on my way to Yokosuka to catch the Kitty Hawk back in 64. 2AM daylight is eerie.

Re: NASCAR in Primetime

Well, I tried to watch it with an open mind, so it started off ok. I thought some of the things the fans said were pretty good, which I could relate to. But as it went on, and it became a program about 3 drivers, it went downhill until the last segment with the bikers. That was just plain stupid. (I think the real bikers I know would laugh at those two, but anyway). And just think, they're gonna follow those 3 drivers again next week.
Ho hum!

It was 100 degrees the evening I was there. I was on my way from Phoenix the Abliene. I never complain about heat. That's why I live down here in Mobile; 90 degree summers with 75% humidity - it just don't get no better than THAT!

I made that exact trip a couple of times. Got Flying Tiger DC-10 out of Travis; couple hours on the deck in Anchorage, then on to Haneda. Much, much younger then; thought that it was fun.

Kitty, eh? My only experience with her was that I had SP in Sasebo in 1972 when she out-chopped from there after the riots. NOT a fun night.

Re: NASCAR in Primetime

I like Phoenix, but it do get hot! still, I think there's something about CenTex and its humidity that can make late summer miserable .. kinda like Memphis.

You're lucky you took the "northern" route, it'd been a bit warmer on I-10...

my flight was a 707 .. paired up soldiers & sailors w/dependents so we could help them with the trip .. luckily mine didn't have a baby like some of my buddies did!!! was my first trip "overseas" so, like you, I was enjoying it all.

Guess I was lucky with my SP .. sort of: first pulled in Honolulu on board the Midway ('65) prior to WestPac (North & South China Seas) then nothing until the next year as an E5 at Subic while on board the Oriskany. the latter duty I mostly got the gate or riding around in a jeep with the senior NCO "monitoring", though I did the "Jeepney turnaround" at Olongapo once.....(RHIP I guess )
