Police catch fan who tried to get Kenseth autograph during race?

The fan which jumped the fence and attempted to retrieve autograph from Matt Kenseth during a late-race red flag period was eventually apprehended by local authorities. NASCAR has passionate fans, but that's way over the line. As much as the incident may have made for good TV, NASCAR has enough problems keeping up with the drivers on the track and certainly don't need fans mudding the picture. -- Charlotte Observer

while we all appreciated the humor of the moment, it does raise a serious issue: fan's on the "playing field" during the event... I don't know of any sport where it's tolerated, and NASCAR events are much more dangerous to a fella in shorts and tennies than a 350 lb defensive tackle.

My question is how in the heck was he able to bypass security to do it? And he wasn't even caught immediately! Amazing - NASCAR obviously has to do a better job at these roadcourse venues of protecting the drivers...

He was one of the fan's set up in the infield and just walked over to the guard rail and stepped across. I guess Nascar thought that no one would be stupid enough to attempt such a stunt that they would need to have security in that area .

Re: Police catch fan who tried to get Kenseth autograph during race?

Does anyone remember this ?

Cup start 363: June 13, 1993
At Pocono, a fan runs across the track during the race in front of Kyle Petty and others.

"That race has become almost legendary," Petty said years later. "It’s amazing to me how many people will bring up that race, and they don’t remember I won it. All they remember is that guy climbing the fence in the infield, running across the race track, climbing the wall and then disappearing.

"I tell you, I’ve seen a lot of things in racing, a lot of things that are pretty strange. But that might have been the strangest thing that’s ever happened."

while ovals have maximum protection for the fans from the track, road courses are, traditionally lax concerning fans proximity to the racing surface and rely on "common sense" in the higher breed. deer, rabbits other wild creatures who do not have the higher breed's "common sense" have been known to disrupt races (many times with their own death) in pastoral settings without the necessary barriers to prohibit their witless entry. in this case, the higher breed's greed overcame his common sense.

I remember the Pocono race that Davey had said this guy was hanging on the fence over in turn 2 (I think) giving him the bird!! When asked what he did, he said, "I was so shocked to see him, but when I came around again, he was still hanging there and gave me the bird again, so I gave it back!! Will never forget that interview, certainly not word for word, but the ulmitate end, "I gave him the bird back"!!!! To cool!!!
Sure do miss Davey!!

OOOOOOoooooooooooooppppppppppppppps, back to Kenseth hoopla!!

So your saying that a NA$CAR racecar is more pounding then Terry Tate? I don't know... I think it would be to close to call
