| NASCAR a less risky investment? Bob Simonson, an analyst who follows motorsports for the Chicago-based investment firm William Blair & Company, said the $4.8 billion television deal with ESPN, Fox and TNT, as well as multimillion-dollar sponsorships, provide earnings predictability that makes Nascar a less risky investment. If this means Nascar has arrived, the influx of outside investors raises questions about where the sport is headed. Even as Nascar insiders marvel at the high profile of the investors who have shown interest in the sport, some say it is far too early to predict the impact of their arrival. "I do find it interesting, if not more than a little bit mildly ironic, that people that own some of the more iconic franchises in sports, like the Boston Red Sox, looked at our sport and said, ‘That's where I really want to be,' " Eddie Gossage, the president of Texas Motor Speedway and a longtime racing promoter, said last week in a telephone interview. "Is it good for the sport? I don't know. It's something that I don't think we're going to know for a long time." -- NY Times http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/07/sp...tml?ref=sports |

| Re: NASCAR a less risky investment? No. And there is a potential good aspect of this in that one CAN invest in some of the participants/contributors (i.e. - track/track owning organizations as an example). Why good? Because a stockholder can support a positive counterbalance to the control leverage of the governing body. BUT, the investor must also be an investigator to ensure the firm they choose to support via their stock purchase articulates a vision consistent with their (the investors) own for the sport. NOW, will the preponderence of the "NASCAR bad" voices take the time to investigate and vote/support in this manner? Before ya ask - me too/either. Vote was cast here by decreasing by 33% (4 seats) our ticket purchases for 2008, and providing the venue with the "why". Believe me, the venue called the home near daily for weeks (we had the tickets for near 20 consequetive years). Will it matter? Only if enough others step up to the plate. |
