Hamlin rubs some the wrong way

Denny Hamlin didn't endear himself with several drivers yesterday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The former Chesterfield resident was criticized for being overly aggressive in some unpredictable situations. Jamie McMurray pointed an accusing finger at Hamlin, saying Hamlin caused him to loose control of his No. 26 Ford prior to a six-car accident on Lap 46. "Matt [Kenseth] was trying to get underneath Jimmie [Johnson], and he was all the way beside the 48 [Johnson], and then the 11 [Hamlin] just kind of made it three-wide at the last second," McMurray said. "You're pretty much already out of control, and when their momentum gets lost or someone makes a fast move like that, it's hard not to run into each other." Jeff Gordon also wasn't happy with the former Chesterfield resident. Hamlin nearly took the points leader out twice soon after the Lap 68 restart. "Hamlin's all over the damn place," yelled an irate Gordon while talking with crew members on the radio. "It looks like to me he has a good car. Why is he doing it?" -- Richmond Times-Dispatch

I am really starting to think maybe the success may be getting to Hamlin's head alittle? I guess time will tell.

Re: Hamlin rubs some the wrong way

And even Jr. was heard to tell his crew to - go see his people, and tell them if he keeps it up, I'm going to park him.

Hamlin is a great talent with equipment that positions him regularly for the win. He's in his "Kyle Busch" stage at times in the "over driving" a/some situations. Unfortunately he does not have a senior team mate that can appropriately mentor him.

He clearly becomes very upset when the opportunity to win is lost due to a miscue on the part of his team, or himself.

Personal viewpoint at this time - he's not crossed over into the "totally stupid" zone, and he may well become JGR's #1 with a bit of time.

that may well be Tony's major irritant: he won't be #1.

Hamlin still has some "growing" to do, but you can't fault his intensity .. he's there for one reason in his mind and 2nd place is way below where he's aiming. with his youth and talent, he will make it with proper coaching (there's that word again.)

So now are we going to take the word of Jamie McMurray, Jeff Gordon, and Tony Stewart, who have accused other drivers for their mistakes. While Denny has done some stupid things this year, these others have also. There is an old saying that these drivers should be reminded of. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." This is just more of the 'pot calling the kettle black.'

as I was watching Jamie's interview, I marveled at his recall of the events that put him in the garage and his honesty about his season. I don't think he was "pointing an accusing finger at Hamlin", he merely stated what he saw in answer to the question that was asked: "tell us what you saw". the inference that he "accused" Hamlin of causing the wreck is entirely the press' interpretation. later in the interview Jamie admitted they had been having their problems this year and had to focus on finishing races. he said that in answer to the question about whether he felt they had "turned the corner" with his win a few weeks ago. that was the same time he said the chase "wasn't important".

so I don't buy it that Jamie was placing blame, or that he was trying to act righteous.

Re: Hamlin rubs some the wrong way

I think this is probably the best reason I've seen why Jr. was so upset with Hamlin, and pretty much answers my question in the thread I created. So thanks for that.
I'd still like to hear from Jr. though, why he wanted to park Denny, but I doubt we'll ever from him about this, since they're good friends.

I hate to see Hamlin drive like this because I think he has a allot of natural talent. He's got a big future ahead of him if he does it right. But he's young.
And young drivers in NASCAR sometimes do dumb things. This may very well be one of those times for Denny. Maybe seeing on Monday how many other drivers he upset, especially his friend Jr, he'll step back and see what he did. And we'll never know, unless they say so, if Junior called Denny on Monday privately and told him what was going on. That would probably get Denny's attention more than anything. Would mine.

Over the years that Jamie has been in Cup, I've heard quite a few live TV interviews from him and I think he's a mid to upper level class act. Not like some other drivers, that I'll not name, that have called for other drivers to be fired, more than once. Also you are correct that the Print Press has made this interpretation, not the live interview. I was only responding to the original 'news' story.

still, you know the PR people at Roush are pulling their hair out trying to figure out how to get him roll out the list of sponsors at the start of his interviews .. he always seems to get the major in (though not right up front) and seems to leave it at that (which I'm grateful for.)

I try not to respond to the media's interpretation of the news, except to criticize it. I prefer to comment on the news itself. the Print Press are the worst of the bunch 'cause they're the last out with the news and have to use sensationalism to grab attention. guess I'm old school, it's pretty hard to convince me I didn't see or hear what I know I did, but some folks rely on the media to "interpret" and "validate" what they just witnessed.

I thought Jamie did a great job explaining what happened during that interview...I even comented to that effect in the race thread.

As for Denny ...the kid is real close to being a top gun

like several tracks they race, Hamlin needs to slow down and not press so hard .. he'll end up going faster.

He's still young.... he'll learn, or someone will wreck him. He just needs a good vet to talk some sense into him and teach him to let the race come to him, and not let the miscues get to him.

Hence why I said he "needs" a good vet.
