I think what we are drivin at RD is if, the powersteering goes followed by the engine, then you would think about something up front, my first guess was one belt came off causing another to come off(not sure if those cars run on serpentines or not), but, that's me.

If you have a catastrophic engine failure internally such as a thrown rod, valve down an engine etc...you can throw a pulley at the same time. I've seen it happen numerous times in drag racing so I'm pretty sure it's at least possible in a stock car. I guess when you get a sudden hiccup at 9k rpm's ti does bad things. The ones I've seen had clean sheared off bolts.

no serpentines in Cup! too catastrophic if it fails.

I think you're right on (I wrote something about it in "Ask the Experts" this morning.) my guess is it took out the oil pump belt => loss of oil pressure => engine blows.

I didn't think they would be that stupid, but then again, we see what stupidity they are capable of today.
