Re: Brickyard Pre - Race Talk

Some other notes that may or may not be significant:
  • As mentioned, Dale Jarrett, two time 400 winner, failed to qualify.
  • In true Indy fashion, two Chip Ganassi owned cars are on the front row, a Penske Car right behind and a Mears starts 9th. Good luck to my USAC boy Ryan Newman
  • Tony Raines starts 11th. That Hall of Fame racing team has been putting down some solid runs. This is a place where they could break through, and Raines gave them a good opportunity to do so with a good starting spot.
  • Scott Wimmer made the field with a solid 22nd place run. He's another guy I think deserves another chance at Cup, and he's on the inside with RCR now. Great chance to show himself tomorr... today.
  • Sorry, I gotta do a little whining here. Jeff Gordon's win in the inagural race has been all over ESPN, but what they fail to show (not suprisingly) is that HE SHOULD NOT HAVE WON THAT RACE. Ernie Irvan in a Robert Yates Ford was leading by a pretty fair margin until a tire wnt down with about 4 to go. Ernie, being one of the best at taking care of equipment and cruising would have easily won that race had he not lost a tire.
Hope for a good race tomorrow.

Re: Brickyard Pre - Race Talk

also, did you notice all the DODGEs up front? there's 2 chevies and a single ford in the top 10! maybe the dodge boys did find something they'd been overlooking...

sadly the first 'yota is in 25th. Vickers is proving to be the fastest 'yota in qualifying, but needs to be more consistent in finishes, and Blaney is 2 spots behind Brian. if the first 'yota win comes this year, it'll be one of these two who gets it (sorry, Wimmer should stick to Busch where he has a chance.) true to form MWR is slower than molasses, though Reutimann keeps overachieving. I hope AJ figures out what's wrong soon, 'cause he's too good a driver to be missing the race every week.

it wouldn't hurt my feelings to see the "R" boys (Reed and Ryan) finish 1-2

and somehow the other Jeff (Burton) keeps quietly showing up in the top 10.

I'm not a fan of the term "That's racing", but that is racing. Those are the incidents that make a winner out of a second place car. The one that stands out in my mind the most was the Daytona 500 when, in 1990, Dale Sr should have won the race but a much less than second place driver, Derrike Cope, got the victory that year. Derrike didn't win the race, Dale lost it and that is what happened to Ernie that year.

That's racin' !!!

Also the 1979 Daytona 500 won by Richard Petty. If Donny Allison and cale Yarborough hadn't wrecked on the last lap Petty would just have 199 wins. Like I always heard Richard say "I would rather be lucky as good any day."

I was an Irvan fan, but actually cheered for Gordon's win at the Brickyard. Yup, I said it! That was a long time ago ... long before Gordon and/or his image became the overkill that it is today.

I believe Big E had many of those instances when he "should have won" the 500, but didn't. Took him 20 years, and finally won under the caution.

I'll never forget that day in 1998! Have you ever seen anything like it? Like him or not, what a reception!

Miss my Big E ...

Re: Brickyard Pre - Race Talk

I didn't even have to go look at it. I saw it live on TV. My opinion on this type of driving is well documented within the GTG NASCAR Forum threads.
