Starting Spots Should Not be for Sale
By Dennis Michelsen
The NASCAR Nextel Cup circus is heading to its twentieth race of the season and it looks as if one lucky team will be able to buy their way into the show the rest of the year! Bobby Ginn learned that the old joke is true about how to make a small fortune in racing. He started with a huge fortune and went racing this season. Now he will merge with Dale Earnhardt Inc and Paul Menard will have a starting spot guaranteed the rest of the season. That is just fine, companies merge all the time. But one of Bobby Ginn's car numbers will be left over and sold to the highest bidder so they can make it in the show this weekend. If NASCAR allows this mid-season fire sale of JUST the number they are setting a bad precedent. Starting spots should not be for sale!

don't know where this guy has been for the past bunch of years (as long as the "Chosen" rule has been in effect!) it's not like it hasn't happened before - seems to me Mikey bought a starting spot earlier this year....

Re: Starting Spots Should Not Be For Sale

I thought they had to just do away with the points from the other car? Didn't I read that they can't sell the points? So where does this guy get that they are selling the starting spot from it?

In completing this merger, points on Ginn Racing's No. 13 car, which was 34th in NASCAR Nextel Cup owner's points, have been eliminated.

I thought that was right. Maybe the guy who wrote this other article about them going to the highest bidder should do some research and then write.

Right! Points can't be actually sold. The only way the #13's points could have been transferred to another car was that Ginn would have to become "part-pwner" of the car the points were transferred to. That, as it turns out, was why he became "part-owner" of the #15.

One name which has been conspicuously absent in ALL the DEI/Ginn news is John Menard. I just can not help but believe that, since his son's racing future was at stake, he was involved with this deal in some fashion.

BAH! Why can't NASCAR make it this simple:

I suspect he was standing behind Ginn & Co. waving dollar bills at Teresa and Max .. just to remind them which choice was the right one

I think everyone agrees with that statement...........except the corporate sponsors, who are now really in control of Na$car.
Whoops, that sounds like something a pesky 25 year fan would say.
