To grow, NASCAR has to gain a foothold in new markets. Recent attempts to build tracks in New York and Seattle failed. "NASCAR has been obsessed with New York for 20 years," Mark Yost said. "It's almost like they don't feel they've grown up, like they're not one of the major sports, unless they're in New York. They've had plan after plan fail in New York." Yost thinks there's no need for insecurity, noting NASCAR's annual awards banquet is in the city, and recent parades around Times Square by drivers in their race cars have drawn enthusiastic crowds and coverage on national morning television. "NASCAR has cleared that Manhattan hurdle," Yost said. "It's cool in certain precincts. I mean, (drivers) Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon live there."
