New surface at Bristol passes first test

The new concrete surface at Bristol Motor Speedway received positive reviews from NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series drivers during a test session on Monday. Thirty teams were at Bristol turning the first laps around the 0.533-mile oval track since it was resurfaced following the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race on March 25.Todd Bodine (No. 30 Lumber Liquidators Toyota) was the first truck on the track when the test session started and came away impressed."This is by far the best revamping of a track ever," Bodine said. "No doubt about it. The people here knew what they wanted with the re-do and they went out and did it. This is the way it should be done."
The resurfacing was the first since 1992, when the asphalt track was replaced by an all-concrete surface. Although no major changes were made to the track, variable banking was added to the turns to help smooth the transition to the straightaways. The track is also three feet wider now, which leads some drivers to believe a third – or "high" – groove will come into play during the race.

Man, the transition from straightaway to turn used to be the best part of Bristol (or worst, depending on how you look at it). When you went into the turns, it felt like you were getting sucked out the window while at the same time, it felt like you were boreing a hole in the ground.

Just shows how drivers have changed.

Re: New surface at Bristol passes first test

Bristol is far from my favorite track but it'll be interesting to see how the new surface changes the race.

People love the short track slam-bang you would normally get at Bristol, and I admit, it is exciting. I doubt we'll be seing as much of that as usual though. Variable/progressive banking and an extra 3 feet of racetrack will probably cut it down considerably. Obviously, the drivers have more room, and that progressive bank won't throw the cars against each other.

They say progressive banking makes for better racing, but I haven't seen it yet.

I'll be honest and admit that I like seeing spectacular accidents but Bristol is just one major accident after another. Not enough actual racing but I do understand that is the nature of this track and most people just flat out love Bristol. It is a great fan track if you like that type of racing.

actually better racers make for better racing. but progressive banking helps mediocre racers look better than they are. still the quality of the racing is a function of the quality of the racers.

..let's see, there's gotta be another half dozen ways to say the same thing .. maybe I'll just let the rest lie there for the time being.... who knows? maybe somebody got it!

they keep "improving" that track and it'll be a quarter mile long with 10 racing lanes, 200 thousand seats and a retractable dome .. pits & garage will be under the track with entry/exit ramps from the racing surface and a hundred foot wide big screen at each end so the fans can see what's going on "down below"...

Bruton has talked about a dome no kidding. As loud as it is now I would hate to hear it with a dome.

Re: New surface at Bristol passes first test

I really hope France doesn't get online much...

And also, an extra 36 inches of racetrack and 3 wide racing at bristol doesn't mean better racing. It means an extra 36 caution flags. It will never work.

one of my first tractor pulls was inside the "Coloseum" in San Antonio .. a building originally built to hold rodeos indoors. I sat at the top .. row 25, I think .. for a while. moved down .. way down .. when we couldn't see or breath. them diesel tractors are bad news inside....couldn't hear for a week either.
