But, as I understand it, what that actually meant was that Pontiac would not be providing any help or support to the teams running Pontiacs. They could continue to run them if they wanted, but they were on their own. "Back then" (sounds like so long ago, doesn't it?) Ford, Dodge & Chevy had wide open wallets and Toyota was just getting their trucks running...

as a stewart fan and a chevy fan, i would hate for that to happen. Stewart and hamlin are doing great in chevys and when i first heard that toyota will be coming to nascar, i almost destroyed my tv! i hope it never happens!

Since they no longer race Chevie, Fords, Toyotas, etc., I'm basically indifferent about the matter,

That being said, make no mistake about it, Toyota WILL become a major part of some successful and established team within the next two years. In all it's racing history, Toyota has never had a long learning curve. If they haven't been immediately succesful, they do whatever it takes to acquire success.

I don't know that it'll be Gibbs, but I bet it will be them, or Ganassi or Penske by 2009.

FYI, I have NEVER, repeat N-E-V-E-R, owned a rice burner, either two nor four wheels.

I seam to recall that the car they raced was the GrandPrix. If I'm not mistaken there was a rule in NASCAR that limited the age of body styles that could be on track to something like 3-5 years. Pontiac had at that time announced that they were not going to produce GrandPrix. So all the teams that ran them went to other makes. That was the year that Dodge reentered Cup racing.

unlike some other racing series, the engines have to match the bodies in NASCAR, so if you don't have a body, there's no place to run the engines, so there's no development/support the manufacturer can provide to a team.

isn't that the same as saying "we're pulling out!"?
