Simple Math! Petty vs. Earnhardt vs. Gordon!

Ok so I went on a journey through statistics, I see many of us who dont know how to compare the era vs. era, well neither do I, but I can do this math equation and show you how they fair on equal statistical ground!

I took the first year That Petty(1960), Gordon(1994)_and E(1979)all won their first race!
Hang with me!

Then added each win for the next 14 seasons (the current season Gordon is in) and added the win totals.

Then I subtracted wins, that exceeded the season totals for E!
example, E raced 29 races in 1988 (9 seasons into his career) then I went 9 seasons into Petty's career, and anything after the 29th race I subtracted those wins from his total from that season, and the same for Gordon!

I added the totals from those 14 seasons minus the excess races and here are the numbers!

Richard Petty 1960-1973 88 wins 4 Championships
Jeff Gordon 1994-2007 73 wins 4 Championships
D. Earnhardt 1979-1992 53 wins 5 Championships

These numbers are just stats for a conversation starter!

So are you admitting that Petty is the greatest now?

Not even close! Petty is the greatest statistical driver of all time, how ever much that counts!

Re: Simple Math! Petty vs. Earnhardt vs. Gordon!

Once again Ill quote myself by saying that you can make numbers do whatever you want them to do. They mean nothing unless they are being compared in like situations. All the research that was done was done in vain. They were different eras, different cars, different equipment and maybe even different tracks.

The entire deal about the best driver ever will always be subject to opinion. Is it that hard to accept ? I'm sure that most anyone could take any of the top 20 that were listed in that program and twist the numbers to make them #1 .... in their opinion.

I just evened the playing field as much as it could be, These numbers are not twisted to convey anything about either of these three drivers, what it does illustrate is an even amount of races over an even amount of years, thats as fair as it can be until you put Gordon in Petty's cars!

Re: Simple Math! Petty vs. Earnhardt vs. Gordon!

I could just throw up. Let it go. Crunch numbers all you want, research isn't the measure of the man.

There is no such thing as simple math, with Stats.

You can debate every sport, and never come up with a winner.

Lots of folks think Emmitt Smith is nowhere near the equal of Jim Brown, or even Barry Sanders.

Babe Ruth vs Barry Bonds.

Too many examples to name.

You can crunch your numbers until your fingers turn blue, but all you seem to accomplish is annoy others, and then place yourself above them when they don't agree with you.

I thought we had put this to rest.

Ah well, at least you have your own thread about it now, I hope it stays here, and stops invading other threads!

Good luck!

How about Petty in Gordons cars! That would be interesting. I bet he would hold up pretty well in that trade. I would love to have seen Mark Martin run that race in Gordons car. JPM did pretty well in that ride in "trading paint"!

No one feels "challenged" by your posts. Just annoyed with them. I'm glad you are smart enough to "challenge" all of us.

What would we do without you?

We've already had this discussion on here once. No need to go through it again. Do a search and you'll find it and will know what everyone thinks.

Re: Simple Math! Petty vs. Earnhardt vs. Gordon!

Geez folks. Just "go" with the manipulation of time, space, statistics, and cyberfaces, close yer mind to outside influences, say reality and/or life as examples, and discuss the apparent truth and value of the outcome!!

Once the fun is done with this hypothetical scenario, we're working on another to prompt discussion and fire off heretofore untouched synapses. But go slow for we believe there may be error somewhere in the scenario. Keeps coming to additional names for the list presented here that mystify. Speed Racer, Barney Rubble, The Roadrunner (not the Chrysler product), and the Tortoise. Indications are that early Stone Age period records may be questionable and will have to be eliminated from the process. Maybe it's really pointing to Barney Oldfield ----- hmmmm

Not one person here has cried foul. A few, myself included, pointed out to you that stats mean nothing except to the person creating them. You in fact manipulated the numbers. You arbitrarily eliminated some number of races to make the "number of races" equal. The numbers do not equate to the similarity of tracks. The races are not under like conditions. The only thing that is similar about them is what YOU wanted to find similar in them.

I don't think anyone here feels challenged by you. Irritated, yes because of your lack of understanding about the mentality of the posters on this forum. We come here to enjoy the NASCAR discussions and when they are injected by immature venom people tend to get turned off by that. If that is your goal you, for me anyway, have been a complete success. If you really want to do some research set up a poll to see how many do not appreciate your style of posting. Two simple questions would work quite well. Now there is a challenge for you.
