Gordon, 'Talladega Nights' Win ESPYs

Jeff Gordon appears to be heading toward a fifth NASCAR Cup Series championship and fans are noticing. Via online voting by sports fans, Gordon won the Best Driver Award on Wednesday night at the 15th annual ESPY Awards at Kodak Theatre. Gordon bested his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson, Daytona 500 champion Kevin Harvick, IndyCar Series champion Sam Hornish Jr., Indianapolis 500 champion Dario Franchitti and NHRA Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher.

"Winning an ESPY is an honor," Gordon said. "It's one of the most prestigious awards in sports. It's a credit to how the No. 24 DuPont team performed over the last year.
"Hopefully we can continue to have success through the end of this season and be in contention for next year's award as well."
"Talladega Nights," a popular comedy starring Will Farrell, gave NASCAR its second victory of the night by winning in the Best Sports Movie category. Other films in the category were "We Are Marshall," "Pride" and "Invincible."
"Clearly, the movie was terrific because of the unbelievable talents of Will Farrell, director Adam McKay and their team," said Dick Glover, NASCAR vice president for broadcasting and new media. " 'Talladega Nights' was a fun experience for both NASCAR fans and non-fans. It was a mixture of realistic racing action and hilarious comedy.

"But what's really exciting about this ESPY is the fact that fans decided the category winner. This is the best form of fan feedback you can have. In this case we know that we provided something they truly enjoyed."
Johnson, the reigning NASCAR Nextel Cup champion, also was nominated in the Best Championship Performance category. That award went to Peyton Manning, quarterback for the Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts. Harvick also was part of another nomination for NASCAR, in the Best Finish category. Harvick edged Mark Martin by 0.02 seconds in the Daytona 500 in February. The award went to last September's 11-10 Los Angeles Dodgers victory over the San Diego Padres, in which the Dodgers hit four consecutive home runs in the ninth inning to tie the game 9-9, then had another homer in the 10th inning to win.
Wednesday night's ceremonies will be televised at 9 p.m. ET Sunday on ESPN.

No offense to NASCAR or Will Ferrell fans, but - Invincible was by far a better movie. Haven't gotten to see Marshall yet, but I bet it was too.

Anything was better than that cheezy steriotipical movie about Nascar, I consider watching it the biggest waste of my time ever!

And just so we dont forget the most important thing about this article, Big props to Gordon for being VOTED by the FANS the BEST driver of 07!

Those awards are all pretty subjective. Rookie of the year, most popular, best driver. They mean nothing, especially when it is fan voted. Nothing more than a popularity contest.

I didn't get to watch. Did the JR fans in the audience throw a bunch of trash on the stage when Jeffy got his award?

I can't believe that ANY movie with Will Farrell could win ANY kind of award.

Amen to that, Scotty. I kept hearing how I needed to watch Anchorman cause it was so funny. Complete rubbish, that's what it was.

Will Farrell was good on the SNL setting but full length movies are a challenge for him. You can only do the same stuff for so long before people notice it.

There were a few funny lines ("catch phrases"), but for the most part, that movie smelled worse than my steel toed boots.

re: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

Observation: most folks we know that have been directly involved in racing (drivers, mechancis, owners, officials, etc.) look for more/something different than the casual fan, the lesser informed/involved, from cinamatic efforts/presentations.

They (those having been directly involved) are less able to separate themselves (personal indictment) from the reality they have come to know. They (I) tend to want humor that is "real" from/in the context of what they have directly experienced at the track. There is a lot of "humor" in the reality of racing. I'd venture Racer Duck can relate and even begin to laugh at some memories this comment would re-fire. Unfortunately, "real" race humor would/could not reach the audience necessary to make a film/movie a "success" amongst the general viewing audience. We sat with folks that did not have an iota of knowledge with motorsports. Watched them laugh histerically at things that left us blank.

Did we ever see a "racing movie" we fully enjoyed. No. Of true crap were - "The Ballad of Ricky Bobby", then there was that that absolute crap pot thing Stallone did, and yes, even "Days of Thunder" (Although there were some snippets of Days that were close).

Holy Crap, where am I going with this. Nowhere - hope ya enjoyed the ride.
