| Something for tailgating Here's something you might (or might not) want to cook up and take the next time you tailgate: A rutabaga casserole with carrots. INGREDIENTS: 1 large rutabaga, peeled and cubed 4 medium carrots, shredded 2 tablespoons butter 1 egg 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon salt dash pepper 1 cup evaporated milk 1 cup cooked rice PREPARATION: Cook rutabaga, covered, in boiling salted water until tender, about 25 minutes. Drain well. Cook carrots in boiling salted water for about 5 minute, until just tender. Transfer cooked rutabaga to a mixing bowl. With an electric hand-held mixer, beat rutabaga with butter, egg, brown sugar, salt, and pepper until smooth and fluffy. Stir in milk; stir in rice and carrots. Spoon into a buttered 10x6 or 8-inch square baking dish. Bake at 350° for 35 to 40 minutes. Serves 10 to 12. I can't wait to see how Jeffy-Pooh and/or The Felon gets mixed into THIS thread...<G>

| Re: Something for tailgating Nice... I got a couple things to add. Steaks on the grill If possible let steaks marinate in beer all day and throw on the grill Or... for the bourbon crowd... get a bowl, dump in your favorite BBQ sauce, add a little Lowry's, and a good tip of the 101 bottle. Pour over your favorite steaks for a portion of the day and refrigerate. Then get the grill good and hot and cook'em to a good medium-rare.

I bet that chef was related to JG .. or JJ .. or maybe RH!!! yeah, that it: RH .. he spoiled a great day for a smart (and cute) 2nd grader... but what is it? it looks kinda like yellow turnips .. but tastes like horsey poo (so I'm' told .. never worked up the courage to try the latter but probably should have - nothing can be worse than rutabega!)

the rutabega according to wikipedia is a root vegetable that originated as a cross between the cabbage and the white turnip. Some claim the vegetable is native to Sweden, but others think it was introduced to Sweden, possibly from Finland or Siberia, in the early 17th century. From Sweden, it reached Scotland, and from there it spread to the rest of Great Britain and to North America. The town of Cumberland, Wisconsin, celebrates a "Rutabaga Festival" each year, always the weekend preceding Labor Day Weekend. The International Rutabega Curling Championship annually takes place at the Ithaca, NY, farmer's market.
