The chances of those two not making a show is pretty slim, unless they crash or blow up in qualifying. So the fans will still be there.
The problem with the top 35 rule is it makes it extremely hard for the underfunded teams to get in the show. Making the show makes them much needed $$$ with the huge purses today, no matter where they finish. The top teams already have monster budgets and fat corporate contracts. If they miss a race, its not going to be near as devastating as to a team that is already treading water to stay alive.

Re: Top 35 locked in could change!

Here's my question:

Has anyone at the NASCAR braintrust given any consideration the money the teams who DON'T make a race because of weather LOSE?

I'm sure Boris Said's team had to spend a boatload of money to get to Daytona and to add insult to injury he fails to make the race after qualifying at the top!

NASCAR has to figure out how to evolve further to avoid wronging the "little guys" because I don't think they're planning to change the date of this race anytime soon! (Hurricane weather anyone?)

I agree Gnome. The way it's setup now, the struggling teams just sit and watch the rich get richer. But that seems to be the way todays society is as a whole. Nobody ever has enough money or fame.

That is the trouble with your thinking. Yesterday that may have been a valid argument. There may have been 2-3 teams that went home because they didn't qualify. Now we are looking at 10 teams that go home. That many million dollar sponsors can get NASCAR's attention. I think at some point down the road you're going to see changes in how qualifying is done in respect to how many have guaranteed spots there are. It may never be only the top 43 fastest but this top 35 guarantee is on its way out.

I would also argue that if drivers like Said could get in on their speed you'd see them more often which would increase their sales. Those trailers get none of my money. I go to see the race. My hat or T-shirt don't make the viewing any better or any worse.

I'm not sure if this is the correct spelling, but in reference to the "fan" referred to in the above:
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

I'm sorry, but I sincerely hope your attitude is not representative of the majority of the newer Nascar fans. If so, the series is in a sad state of affairs.

"A sad state of affairs" is merely a perspective of an individual. The obvious job of NASCAR is to make money. That is happening. I openly admit that I complain about the way NASCAR operates, but at the same time I can honestly and openly admit that if any of the top 35 were to not make the big show I'd still be in line with my ticket.

Keep in mind that it isn't the "Newer fan" that built the base that NASCAR was built on. Not saying that the old time fan is all that keeps it alive but they are still a force in the game. NASCAR has been alive and basically well for over 50 years ... it isn't the newbies that got it here and they are not the be all, end all for NASCAR.

Good response, but Nascar is trying to attract those fans, into becoming full blown fans without them Nascar shrinks back into the southern doledrums!

Once again if that is an opinion ... fine. If you think it is factual show me a link that states it. If anything NASCAR is enjoying its revolving door fans ... here today and gone tomorrow but replaced by another full wallet.

A triple post Im so awsome, Nascar thrives on fans like me because we see that Nascars purpose is to make money just like any other buisness, they dont care about the fan who wants to keep it a small southern sport, thats bad buisness, I thought they made that evident when they created the farse that is THE CHASE!

Who are these fans that want to keep it a small southern sport ?? I like its size although the rules need a little revisiting.

You are right about NASCAR ... they love fans like you. Here today gone tomorrow when your wallet is empty. In other words they have zero interest in you as a fan. You are nothing more than a source of income. When your money is gone they'll appeal to the next wallet.

Those would be the guys who were offended when Jeff won the title in 95 as a young california punk, and hate the Vegas boys, and anyone not from the south because they pronounce their words correctly, those are the guys who hate the chase, which brought much attention to Nascar though it needs improvement, and the COT, Nascars intentions are to make the sport cheaper in the long term for smaller teams yet we openly scream at France to do somthing to help the Boris's small funded teams, but he is we just dont want to wait on the end result! A car that can be used at all 36 tracks! How much cheaper can he make it! Those fans who dont want all that, those are the fans Im refering too!
