| Nascar Sprint Cup Series ![]() Sprint Nextel has changed the name of NASCAR's premier series to the Sprint Cup Series beginning in 2008. "While it's never easy to change the name of your primary series, which in this case will be the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, in talking to the Sprint group for some time now, it's very obvious to us that their focus will be the Sprint brand," NASCAR CEO Brian France said. "The benefits that our industry can get by lining up with their premier brand are pretty obvious ... just the resources that they can bring to the table." The series will continue to be known as Nextel Cup through this season. "NASCAR has an incredibly loyal fan base, and we listened closely to fan feedback to help make this decision," said Tim Kelly, chief marketing officer of Sprint. "It was a long and thorough process to determine how to integrate our NASCAR sponsorship into our overall brand strategy, while still keeping the NASCAR fan at the heart of the decision. "The process extended well beyond the NASCAR sponsorship. This is an evolutionary time for Sprint Nextel's brand. Our new brand campaign focuses on the importance of speed in people's daily lives and illustrates their ability to get information where they want it, when they want it. NASCAR was built on a tradition of speed, so it was a natural tie for us." This marks the lone name change the telecommunications company is allowed to make during its 10-year sponsorship agreement with the sanctioning body. Nextel took over naming rights for NASCAR's premier series in 2004. NASCAR changing premier series name to Sprint Cup |

| Re: Nascar Sprint Cup Series when I read the title for this thread I thought "what? NASCAR is gonna have a sprint car series?" what a stupid idea! talk about confusing lots of fans everywhere! I don't care what the phone company wants to call themselves, they ought to do some research into automobile racing in the US. if they did, they'd find out there's several thousand "sprint cars" already racing in various series across this great land and none of them look like Cup cars, COT or not. now I don't know which organization is dumber than the other: Nextel or NASCAR!!! but one thing is for sure, they both have gone past the absolute bottom of the barrel. not wanting to be politically correct: that's my opinion .. don't like it? tough - learn to live with it.
