Pepsi One,
ya need to go back and check the statistics. back in Petty's day, it was not uncommon for the leader, even when it wasn't Petty, to be the only car on the lead lap at the end of the race.

yes, back then there were superior cars and drivers and there were also-rans. but I doubt you'll find anyone who said Petty's equipment was better than David Pearson's (Holman-Moody, Cotton Owens, Wood Brothers) or Bobby Allison's (Roger Penske, Bud Moore) or Cale Yarborough's (Junior Johnson, Wood Brothers) or Bobby Isaac's (Nord Krauskopf) or Darrell Waltrip's (Junior Johnson) or Benny Parson's (L.G. DeWitt).

I remember Richard Petty in an interview stating why he was so far ahead of everyone else: "one day in a race I lost my brakes .. so I had to learn to race without brakes .. and I did and I won. nobody could understand why I was so much faster than them .. it's because I learned to race without using the brakes!"

I looked at that, thats why i call it driving and not racing, if your three laps ahead of the car behind you who are you racing, i did my research, and i found someone who said it, just last night on this very show that the thread is about, i think it was pearson who said it!

I never see the other drivers belittle Pettys era. The King is the King, and that is my opinion. It is just appaling to see him belittled the way you do it.

I guess he should have taken his gear down to thier level. He won in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Seems to me he had to face some competition somemwhere in those 200 wins. Please.

He had to race to get the lead and race even harder to get three laps ahead. You don't just drive three laps ahead of the field.

Um, he didn't win in the 90's because he was 52 years old in 1992, when he retired. And he was 44 when he won his last race.

I'm done with this post.

If you can't respect a man who won 200 races, I guess you just have very strong feelings against the man. I come to these sites for fun, not arguments!

Good night!

Great race tonight!

And once again, stats don't mean anything in the hearts of a true NASCAR fan. Mark Martin is one of the best racers I've ever seen. Championship? No! Doesn't change my opinion of the man!

I think someone should be playing the stock market ...

Re: Busch Race TV Filler

I regret starting this Thread. I didn't want it to become a Petty vs. Earnhardt vs. Gordon discussion. I just thought the show was a great perspective on the best-of-the-best of the sport, and I thought other GTG members would feel the same. Obviously, for the most part, I was wrong.

If you "listen" to other drivers and their comments about every driver in the Top 20, how can you dismiss their respect for these 20? If you didn't see the show, keep your comments to yourself!

I know, LSC. I know ... off to the trailer with me! So be it!

Re: Busch Race TV Filler

You should not have any regrets. I was thinking I wish I had just left things alone. I guess it's just hard for me to imagine someone questioning of somehow degrading the accomplishments of anyone on that list. And to question in almost any way an absolute and unquestionable legend like the King just really hacked me off.

I now back out of this thread again. Too bad we can't back up in time. It should have bee a fun discussion, but lunacy too hold of it!

I enjoyed and respected your feedback. And I agree that we all should respect ALL drivers' accomplishments. Some "fans" are ignorant. Too bad. They are missing out on a lot!

Very true! Thanks for starting it. And sorry for my contribution to making it something negative!

I've gotta see this show with the sound! I'm sure it was even better then!
