Dale was a great driver, though. I have no issues with giving him his due, even if ya do rip the King.

One Im definatly not an Earnhardt fan, I just respect his driving talent, and two like i said they never show Petty racing, he's always ahead by a mile where's the racing in that?

I was also surprised to see Bobby Allison ahead of Gordon. While Allison was a great driver, overall Gordon is better in my opinion. I would have to disagree with ESPN's list.

That would be my list, then again, that's just my opinion.

The winning thing is only possible because they raced alot more races back then, they raced 60 races in a single season, and Petty won 26 races in a season which tells you how bad the parity was back then! How many drivers could win 26 races next year, how about 13....whats the realistic chance you can win double digit # of races next year...not likely, because Nascar has taken the NFL parity stance it seems!

I said the same thing to myself. There were 60 races in a season, you had more opportunity's to win. We can't compare era's Petty, Earnhardt, and Gordon raced in, because they were different.

The bottom line is, Petty will and always will be the king, and I don't see anyone breaking his record. The only person I see coming close to Petty and Sr in championships right now is Jeff Gordon. But Petty will and always will be the best driver to ever race in NASCAR, and you can debate 2nd on back.

Please, No one will break his record because he raced more races, statistics dont make him the greatest driver, when its all said and done i think Gordon will be 1, Earnhardt 2, and by default Petty will take third!

I love this, here are a few examples, 1975 Richmond race Petty finishes first, in second lennie pond 6 Laps Down! the guy in tenth 56 laps down!

Same thing a few races later he wins second place is six laps down!

Im just gonna follow this year only, He wins atlanta and only Baker is on the lead lap with him!

Wilksboro second place three laps down...and its the same thing over and over....to top it off in 1975 6 guys won 28 out of 30 races....where was his compitition who did these guys have to compete against, when you dont have to race anybody to win is that really racing, i mean imagine watching tonights race and Gordon is 6 laps ahead of second, and second is three laps ahead of third....who are they racing at that point, why should Petty get so much credit! He wasn't racing anyone, he just hit the cruise control and won the races!

It is debatable who is the best driver in NASCAR history, but I stick by my list. By the end of Gordon's career, I bet he will be ranked as the 2nd best, or some may even rank him the best driver ever. But in my opinion Richard Petty will always be the best driver until someone in this era is able to match what he did, which I don't think will happen.
