Actually, sounds fair to me as well. Cars can end up lower at the end of a race, without any foul play taking place.

Sounds like Nascar charged them with three counts...including using unaproved modifications.......

I'm guessing you guys are talking about Kyle the Shrub and not Petty. What happened?

I'm confused - again. (Gee, there's a shock.) Can somebody tie all these "minor" offenses together for me? JG was low because of a shock slipping at Daytona, or something like that, right? He has to start at the back of the pack. Vicker's was low for whatever reason. He goes home. Owner points problem, right? So we don't know what the penalty would be if he could have raced. Busch and Sauter are too low, they are docked 25 points. If it's true that they also were found guilty of "using unapproved modifications", why was the penalty only 25 points? Three similar situations, three different outcomes. Have I over simplified here, because it all looks mighty inconsistent to me, as always. The problem may also well be that I'm less than up to speed on anything to do with the mechanics of a car, and that may well be the understatement of the decade.

Re: Penalty for Kyle and Sauter!

I could only guess that Vickers didn't lose points because he didn't make the race which in itself is a point loss. That in no way reflects any penalty for a violation, if in fact there really was one. Overall I would say that he was not treated fairly, again if in fact there was an actual violation. If there was a rule broken then no matter what there should have been some type of points/$$$$ penalty. There may be a better explanation of exactly what did happen as far as the violation is, and how it compares to the rest.

you've got the basics, let me help clarify it a bit more.
  • Gordon - one of the crew mis-installed a bolt that ultimately slipped during qualifying causing the car to be low. result: qualifying time was disallowed .. since in top 35, was allowed to start at back of pack (using top 35 provisional)
  • Vickers - unknown part failure during qualifying causing the car to be low. result: qualifying time was disallowed .. since NOT in top 35, was sent home (no top 35 provisional)
  • Kyle Busch - unknown part failure during race causing the car to be low. result: race position stays, 25 driver points, 25 owner points, $25K crew chief fine
  • Johnny Sauter - unknown part failure during race causing the car to be low. result: race position stays, 25 driver points, 25 owner points, $25K crew chief fine
the difference between the first two and the last two is the when the infractions were found. when an infraction is found in the post qualifying inspection, the qualifying time is disallowed. when an infraction is found in the post race inspection, fines and penalties are levied. the top 35 provisional is only in effect for making the race, it doesn't come into play for post race things.

hope this helped.
