Like I said it was back during his early days, before he came to Cup full time.
At that time he lived in Kannapolis. Still a long drive, but not if you're racing in Asheboro, Winston Salem, High Point, Greensboro, Durham, or Raleigh. Remember this is North Carolina, almost every city had a dirt track nearby. And Dale raced those tracks every week. I remember when I first saw Dale race, it was at the Winston-Salem track, Not to far from Level Cross. So a visit to the Petty farm wasn't much out of his way.
