Yeah, I'm tryin like the devil to avoid that before I go back into my old ways....

JPM has the talent.... he is just in an organization that just doesn't have the equipment. Put him in a better organization/equipment and he will probably set the circuit on fire.

He's right where he needs to be, Dustin. He and Ganassi are a proven comodity. Just give him time.

I still think that, IF he sticks around (I really have a lot of doubt there), he'll have a following like you wouldn't believe and he'll be successful on ovals.

If these guys aren't "great drivers", I dont know who is.

JPM didnt win the CART Championship, Indy 500 and several F1 wins by being a mediocre driver.
I never said these guys weren't good. you have to be at the top of your game to be in Cup or F1. but having a tremendous talent doesn't automatically make you great .. and there's always a "breaking point" with the homo sapiens creature and things happen that aren't the norm. and these happenings do tarnish greatness, but they don't negate it.

but when the breaking point is reached too often, when reckless disregard for others because of single minded vengence becomes common place, when ego routinely overrules common respect for others, and when senseless pride will not permit admitting mistakes, then that person has not yet reached greatness.

if being able to exploit a single talent is greatness in your mind, then these drivers you mentioned are great according to your definition. but not according to mine. and so we will agree that we disagree.

you have my definition of a great driver. how different is yours?

The highlighted areas sound like you described Tony Stewart to a tee.

Honestly, in my opinion, there are many great drivers, but very few stand head and shoulders above the rest. The late DE was a master at getting the most of an ill-handling car, very few today can match that talent. His famous pass-in-the-grass of Bill Elliott at Charlotte comes to mind. Elliott had a much faster car, but Dale dug deep and found a way to get around him................WITHOUT wrecking him.
YouTube - The Winston 1987 - Earnhardt vs Elliott
Stewart could be in that catagory if he could control his brain-farts.

In most cases, it's the car that makes them what they are. I often wonder how Gordos or JJ's, Cup careers would have turned out, if they didnt have those superior Evernham or Knaus cars under them. I'm not saying they're not great drivers. They are both very good, but no better than a lot of others out there that never got the chance to be in that "perfect car" on a regular basis. This is just my on the matter, and not intended to get the HMS lovers riled up.

So your saying that E wasn't in the best equipment, highly suspect if you ask me, lol perfect cars, if that were true they would have won every race!

You are taking everything out of context. I never said Dale wasnt in great cars, but when they werent the best, he made up for it in sheer ability. Bill was in a superior car at that race and Dale whopped him. My statement about perfect cars, was not at every single race, but at a heluva lot of them.
I took you off my ignore list...........but I think its time to put you back since you seem to be here for no other reason than to challenge everyones opinions.

Im not `challenging your opinion, by saying Jeff and Jimmie are in supior equipment, you insinuated that Earnhardt wasn't! I dont question Earnhardt's talent, he was the greatest talent in all of Nascar!

I'm not sure that Nevada said Sr was or wasn't in superior equipment. What I read the post as, was that when his car wasn't a top car, Dale got alll there was plus a bit more out of it. Possibly more than another driver might.

Re: Juan Pablo Montoya

If anybody had superior equipment they would win every race. Some races they have good and some races not so good.
