| Re: Sprint Takes Over Form Nextel In 2008 No such thing in this day and age. Sprint made Nextel an offer it couldn't refuse. Only thing is I know for a fact people that are leaving Nextel for the fact that it's sprint now. They were starting to experience billing issues like they had with sprint. I know 6 people in a matter of a month have paid the early leave fee to go to Verizon to get away from Sprint. Eventually sprint will go under and we will have a new sponsor for the cup series.

| Re: Sprint Takes Over Form Nextel In 2008 Here is the deal. Nextel had the original contract with Nascar. Sprint and Nextel merged, now Sprint holds the contract with Nascar. I'm sure their were probably options for Nascar to break the contract, but why would they with all that $$$ they are making? When Nascar and Nextel made the contract Alltel and Cingular got grandfathered into the sport. Nextel had exclusive rights to be the only cell phone carrier in Nascar. Because Alltel and Cingular were already in the sport they get to stay, but can't move teams, and once they terminate their contracts with their current teams they can't come back into the sport. So when At&t and Cingular merged I guess Nascar said they that At&t couldn't honor the same contract that Cingular had. Nascar said that they would have keep the Cingular name on the car. At&t didn't agree, because they wanted to get rid of the Cingular name. |

The minute something comes along that longs like it "might" have more, and quicker, profitability, all bets are off, the legal beagles start finding ways for contracts to be broken, commitment and loyalty goes out the window. I still rue the day in 1972 when RJR got deeply involved with NASCAR and started things on this slimy, slippery corporate-controled slope we have now. But one thing you can say about RJR; they lived up to their commitments with NASCAR and were loyal to those commitments to a fault.

I understand both sides of the argument (rights of exclusivity v. rights to freely advertise) and see merits to both. I, personally, have a rabid dislike of cell phones, what they represent and the downward spiral of public manners which they encourage, and would like to see both, plus AllTel just go away. But, sadly, live "reality" TV, it looks like we're stuck with them for years to come. The whole thing reminds me of two kids on the playground arguing over something trivial. Then the principal (read: NASCAR) steps in to show both kids who is REALLY boss. |

Meanwhile, Alltel sits on the sideline (with some other players who "want in") silently hoping it swings their way. By the time this gets thru all the appeals, etc., the telecommunications players will have rebranded themselves again and there'll be none of the original players except NA$CAR....

But then I'm of the generation where the Visa commercial which shows that paying cash actually slows up and degrades business, is an insult. So, what do I know? |
